It's been inevitable for a long time

It should have happened 2 months ago after losing to Huddersfield when we had a fortnight break and Hull FC and London lined up.

I think it's just as well you lost to Hull FC. If he had won that and perhaps stayed on then beat London then it may have dragged on longer.

It got to the Jesse Marsch level with a win keeping him on for a few more matches despite performances being terrible.

It's really interesting reading through this thread the reaction to Smith's appointment. There was certainly a fair mixture of those that had reservations around his pedigree and if he was the man for a club like Leeds. Others thought he was a hidden gem whose recent Queensland Cup coaching was no issue and that he just needed another chance. Obviously the former turned out to be the case.

Smith did a remarkable job in 2022, unfortunately even as someone who really wanted him to be a success moving on from that and actually liked how he looked at RL i think the job was clearly too big for him.

He’s done some great work behind the scenes and with some of the younger players, I actually think Hetherington needs to shoulder a lot of the blame, I think the remit he was given was far too big for a coach of Rohan’s experience

It could have gone either way, indeed initially it went rather well. Then he started implementing his own ideas and changing the squad to how he wanted...

New coach boost, it often happens.

There's zero evidence of any great work behind the scenes.

It hasn't worked and the coach is there to be shot at ,but the man is a human being with a family he will have been feeling pain under the fans criticism.  Remember Brian McDermott fans calling for his head then when he coached team to win the grand final those who were shouting to sack him said great planning to peak just at the right Time.

Soon we will be dancing the fandango
FROM 2004,TO DO WHAT THIS CLUB HAS DONE,IF THATS NOT GREATNESSTHEN i DONT KNOW WHAT IS.

Any coaching appointment can but you can try and put the odds in your favour somewhat.

There was always a decent chance that it was going to end up the way it ended. His past record and experience wasnt great and Leeds were presumably signing him for those wacky ideas.

I have to say with that I agree. It seemed to be a mantra repeated incessantly that wasn't really ever provable or measurable. In any case it's likely Blease will change lots too.

And because he came relatively cheaply perhaps?

I think Hetherington is mainly to blame tbh. His management of the club since Sinfield left has been nothing short of dire. Smith was clearly not the right man for such a big job.

I agree that was a daft time. I never agreed with McDermott out, I never even particularly thought much of getting rid of Agar without having a replacement lined up either. I was disappointed with the results under Furner, but not calling for him to get sacked either.

This has been 18 months (out of 2 years) of going nowhere and pretending it was progress in a tough environment.

I know it's often said but I do find it hard to believe a club like Leeds would have signed a coach mainly due to cost. It just seems a very costly error to make if it doesn't work out. Maybe it was though.

I personally tend to think Hetherington throught he was being clever signing a coaching maverick and that it was a genius move. Who knows.

I think cost isn't a limitation per sé, but I think GH seems to set a budget and won't move from that sometimes. So money can be spent, but no more.

To a certain extent I suspect you are right about the coaching maverick element, the next Holbrook perhaps? I think you could tell in Hetherington's comments about Smith and the young family angle why he hasn't sacked him earlier.

For me it isn't always about results especially supporting who I do. Wins can paper over the cracks, it's the way they play, do they have leaders etc.

Blease probably hasn't had time to evaluate the club so it's 2 finger salute from Rohan really.

At a club like Leeds it has to be about results after 2 years in the job.

not sure about a "taxi for smith"- in this case a sixteen seater minibus for 90% of the current squad might be more appropriate

Don’t agree with that. Barring Frawley who is not good enough for even a mid table SL club and a lack of quality props, it’s a good squad at Leeds. They just lack good coaching. The fact they are still in the playoff mix despite seemingly not running a single planned move or structure all season is testament to that. Someone like Paul Rowley would have that squad in 2nd or 3rd.

I agree the squad is not as bad as is being made out, were a couple of forwards short I think even Frawley would do a better hob if the team weren’t constantly on the back foot

Yeah I agree with that. The whole attitude around line speed and defensive pressure under Smith has been baffling to say the least.

In terms of who Blease goes after for the coaching role, he’d be a fool not to throw the chequebook at the guy who got the best out of Ackers and Croft…and Rowley would be a fool not to accept if he has any ambition for winning major silverware. If Leeds don’t pull the trigger then Saints probably will in a couple of years.

I tend to agree with regard to the forwards but they lack a good field kicking halfback, in fact they needed a Sneyd rather than a Ackers when they raided Salford. That is they didn't need a hooker but a Sneyd like scrum half/first receiver.

They also lack enough players that will battle hard to regain initiative or get back on front foot, One to disrupt and frustrate and niggle away at opposition... Bentley is the only dog fighter so to speak, one that never gives up and is a constant disruptor, someone whom you can see hates to lose - its not a surprise he comes with a St Helens background whilst the rest seem to accept whatever the on field situation is.   Bentley being injured for so long has been a big impact... not because of his mouth but his constant niggling presence of never giving up...  That winning/never give up attitude seems so lacking from the local developed players and should be an area to look at.

He is happy & content though with his long term situation with future opportunities as I stated above.  He lives in a super big house in Worsley which is family owned whereas maybe Mr Lam could be a better bet for the Rhinos in persuasive moves.  Blease could then walk the streets of Salford without worry.

I suspect this won't make sense to you but Rohan Smith looked much more impressive than Sam Burgess after his first season of Super League games.

Touché I'm a proud English man more over a Yorkshire man and I'm quite pleased to see a young Yorkshire man earning his stripes albeit on the dark side but I suspect this won't make sense to you!
