According to the game's historians, 102,575 attendance is the tickets sales, that is to say the totality available. But "they were much more than that" with people without tickets. A serious estimate is 110 or 120,000 spectators.

Posted a bit late. It was on Wednesday 5th. A big week for sport; Roger Bannister ran the 4 minute mile the following day, Thursday 6th.

Had he realised he'd missed the kick off and was trying to get there to see the end?

Yeah, even then they needed a Leigh lad to guide them through Gerry Helme who won the Lance Todd trophy, incidently it was the second time he won it the first player to receive the award twice.

I thought it was the 1999 NRL grand final 107558 at the Sydney Olympic Stadium

I was at the SOS and also at Wembley for the drawn match which had 82,000 in attendance.

I have been to Wembley with near 100,000 attendance but in comparison the Odsal crowd that day was ginormous!

My long departed dad told me it was a poor game. He said whilst in the queue to get in there was a surge and the fence vanished - very dangerously he was swept into the ground - he could not turn his head and could only see one third of the pitch...

Maybe all the good stuff happened in the other two-thirds of the pitch?

My Dad (from Widnes) told me that his car was stuck in a traffic jam and they gave up at Oldham

Parking was that bad that some cars and coaches had to park on the M62 and their passenger’s walk up the M606 to Odsal!!

Sorry to be pedantic, but he ran the first SUB 4 minute mile.

Often overlooked.

It doesn't matter. The biggest rugby event of either code ever occurred in Bradford, 1954.

Police estimate a minimum of 120,000 in the stadium.

The definitive story of the occasion is Robert Gates, There Were A Lot More Than That, which pretty much says it all.
