What a stupid answer.

Going from that remark of yours  - You are saying the whole Town squad plus the other 6 names I listed have no Quality?

We all know Town could do with a couple of Ollie Wilkes/Fui style props To allow Conor and MO.B etc to drop back a row and take a bit of load of them. But to state the whole squad has no quality is a #### remark.

Stop twisting my words!! - at no point in any of my comments have I said that there's no quality in the squad - and I would never go on a forum and slate any signing by name for not being up to the level required for the professional game.

I have full admiration for anyone who wants to try their hand at the pro game but the reality is that the majority of the local amateurs signed over the last few seasons aren't quite good to play at this level. That's no disrespect to the players who I'm sure have given their all to make it as a professional.

The RFL's have done clubs at our level no favours at all over the last 20 odd years, its criminal that there's no reserve league to help develop younger players as well as giving injured players a chance to build up their fitness levels prior to a first team return.

How many occasions in the last 3-4 seasons have clubs (not just Town) been unable to name a team with 17 players due to injuries !!  It's a joke and its up to Town, Haven, Barrow and all the the other clubs to tell the RFL that it isn't good enough and things need to change.

This isn't just a rugby problem, have any of you noticed that lots of the lower league FA sides have scrapped their Under 21 and 23 sides and are going back to having 'B' teams as they see more value than having Under 23's?

Great ideas, but the one big question is where is the money coming from to run these teams .Reserve. A . B  what ever you want to call them .It's ok saying they did years ago ,But  times have changed .and clubs are struggling to run one team . Look at the attendances of most clubs  they a dropped . Unless you have a sugar daddy pumping in money it's very difficult to run one team never mind two ..

The mid to late 70s when Town were competing in the "Big League" and Lancashire Cups did the club not run an A team, which was also  competitive ....infact Lancashire Combination champions if I remember.

Chromedome can you confirm .

Hiya Ian.......the Town 'A' team won the Lancashire Shield Cup competition in consecutive seasons...i.e. 1967 and 1968...don't recall them winning the Lancs Combination...were second though in 1961-62.

Dont know about every team but as explained earlier we have 28 on the squad list currently if we get a couple of big props [that everyone is crying out for] that will be 30 - so that's only 4 - 6 players short of running an A team too- so the cost of running an A team is nearly there already "player wise".

The only extra money involved would be matchdays - winning money etc.

There is no reason [other than RFL inability to do it] that an A team league could be organised so that the A team fixtures match the First team fixtures. Play A team match - before first team match at every venue on every league game.

So all A teams only play in their associated First teams league - therefore if you get promoted/relegated so does your A team.

Super League could have SL academy league, But Championship would have a Champ A league and L1 would have an L1 A league.

1. Transport - never been on one, but team coaches are approx. 70 seaters [18 per team plus staff should be adequate. -so no [zero] extra cost.

2. Matchday winning money would be extra!

3. Facilities - A little bit awkward but if organised would be ok [Town now have extra facilities] and covid showed it was possible to arrange. Or the teams could change whilst the others are playing - not impossible.

Doing this would also add to team/squad building as the First team could watch their A team mates playing for part of their match and likewise the A team could watch majority of First team match, and all travel together.

Also it could help on matchday crowds a little as family /friends of A team players will/could attend games.

And the main thing nobody except the injured would miss playing and this would avoid the need to go back to amateur teams.

And this would avoid ever going to a game without subs again.

Taking a few amateurs to help with the A teams will not deplete the Amateur set up as people [DTTRR] etc keep stating in fact it will add another rung to the Rugby League ladder and possibly an easier pathway through for a lot of young players, and remember every time someone steps up it leaves an opportunity for another person to get into the Amateur team.

As Yanto said they used to manage it in 70s and 80s and that was winter rugby when the pitch and the light wasn't good enough to play 2 games in a row plus  supporters would get hyperthermia watching that long so the used to play on Saturdays so that did involve extra costs for transport etc.

Nowhere near as expensive now if done correctly.

I

It's not that simple a lot of teams applied for the new reserve league 2 or 3 years ago. Haven Halifax and Keighley where refused entry into it

Erm, how is buying and running a coach zero, does it run on air, is it donated, no MOT, on maintenance, no insurance.

Costs for the facilities would be pretty high, energy costs, extra insurance for these games, fire certificate would need to change to cover more games etc.

Will have to look it up.

absolute bare minimum of 50 players to run 2 teams and you can't just call round by the closest amateur club to borrow a player or 2 on a Saturday either.

Read it properly - if the match is played same day then the coach is already paid for as it is taking first team - so no extra costs.

50 - Never!

out of interest did you ever play rugby - league or union?

If you had, you would know that you very rarely manage to field the same team every week. You have work, injuries, general unavailability because of holidays, birthday trips off, trips to the tattoo artist etc.!!

You ask any rugby secretary and they will tell you its a nightmare running one side, never mind two and as I've already said you need a MINIMUM 50 players to run 2 sides, otherwise you end up with lads doubling up to make up the numbers and that brings its own issues of players having to turn out when carrying niggling injuries

I would say 50 would definitely be bare minimum, and games will definitely not be played in the same day.

If it's going to cost so little maybe you could offer to pay for it.

Well pardon me with trying to be positive.

Ill just let you both get back to your Doom and gloom.

You have come up with just about everything negative and managed to avoid anything positive about having an A team.

Well done.

called realism marra!

All of us can all see the problems but finding workable solutions is the hard bit !

The RFL are the major stumbling block as I honestly think they see very little value in the bottom half of the championship and league one sides

Every game you  would need two 21 mam squad's them there's shifts holidays injuries so he's not far out.

Not read all of these posts..but....isn't it the reason 'dual reg' was invented..i.e. to let the top teams (without them having A teams) to have an avenue to give squad fringe players a regular run out within a lower club? Helps both parties??

All dual reg does - It helps SL teams hoover up all the good amateurs from All areas and lend them out when they dont need them.

But dual reg is ###### as it can change from week to week.

I  remember a few year ago when we played Doncaster [ a league rival ] who had quite a few Hull players playing against us and beat us and the next week they played another rival without the dual reg players as they had been called back and got beat - it is false and leads to false results in the lower leagues, does the Super league team care about this - answer is no.

Dual reg should be scrapped.

It should be Loans only on a timed base - no call backs.

P.S

I may be wrong it may not have been doncaster so use as an hypertheticcal please.

  • 2 weeks later...

Can't be bothered starting a new thread. Halifax managed Barrow really well tonight. Even when they went down to 11 they were always on top. Halifax play nice rugby, they make a pass at pace not standing still or walking, use offloads well and don't make mistakes.

The race is not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong, but thats the way to bet!

Think Malludi was lucky not to get a red, deffo contact with the head. I thought Fax were very good, can't wait for our visit there.

Sums things up . These sides are decent to good and  no disrespect to them , but how we make some of them look says way more about where we are

At this stage I think the club should be looking to fetch in a specialist defensive coach, Gary Hewer leaving has bound to have freed up some cash for wages, and the best we can hope for at present is damage limitation and employing a strong defensive coach even for a few weeks might start to rebuild our player's confidence.

Chris may in time become a top coach, but at present he obviously has short comings and if the club can identify a defensive coach and get Chris to buy into it, then it can only help everyone get through this very difficult patch
