Just to let you know, the game thread for this game is in the Aussie forum.

As a matter of interest how many players today will opt out of the green and gold for the WC?

That's an interesting question because to be selected for State of Origin a player has opted to play for Australia.

If any player then subsequently turns down Australia for the World Cup to represent another nation does that mean they have forfeited future SOO selection or is this reset next year? If the latter, then the rules are essentially meaningless.

That's not entirely the fact. Daniel Tupou told Brad Fittler he would not be making himself available for Australia for the WC but would be available for Origin 2. He was then still selected for NSW.

I imagine quite a few others are saying nothing until the Origin series is over and will then do similar things. Australia can't stop the tide here if they want Origin to be strong in future years.

Well it is still the stated criteria even if it is being openly flouted.  I agree that the Australian authorities would do well to try and not push it too hard though.

Not the best origin, even before the score became lopsided, probably the least enjoyable of the games in the SH this weekend, but just better than Wire v Hull. Looking forward to the 3rd match

I am not an expert on Australian culture but the NRL appears to have shot up to about 40% of players with some Polynesian heritage in the last 20 years, and the numbers are even higher in junior football.

In NZ, to see 1000s and 1000s of NZ residents (many born there) coming out like that for Tonga at Mount Smart shows that massive pull of heritage. Other sports would see this as a golden ticket to sustained £££s - the NRL are asking players to supress that in many ways to protect an interstate 3-game series.

Mentioning that game again should carry a forfeit.
