Harry Stottle Posted July 6, 2022 Share Posted July 6, 2022 Joe Mellor on a 2 year extension till the end of 2024, I have only one word WHY, if Leigh do make it and get promoted this year in all intense and purpose he will be an half back in SL. The model Leigh use is not the one for me a club should use to go up. A plan has to be in place. The let's get promoted and hope the relegation trapdoor shuts is not the way forward. Like poor jokes? And the nice thing is that if I ever wanted to visit Leigh, I now know it's off the M6, which I didn't know before. I'd probably continue to either Birmingham or Wigan/Preston though. I didn't make specific reference to Mellor's contract. You asked in your post what could Leigh (and others by extension presumably) do in that scenario. Other than the two options you put forward, Promotion and Relegation wage clauses are an option. A very common option in fact in other P/R models. A viable SL team needs at least three half backs, possibly four - but certainly three. Because of injuries, suspensions etc I would say Mellor is a decent backup half back for a Super League squad.
