Don't know why haven are bothering as Town and Dewsbury are guaranteeing their survival anyway.

It’s all been very strange this season . We’ve got money , the players aren’t there , we sign some average players , let other players go , let average players go somewhere else , we’ve got no money . It’s been weird

Following the statement on Monday 18 July 2022, the Board would like to provide a further update to fans and stakeholders in relation to the immediate actions that have been taken to secure the financial stability of Workington Town RLFC.

On Tuesday 19th July 2022 the Board met with players and coaching staff to discuss the current position and develop a way forward. As reported, results on the pitch have also had a significant impact on attendances and therefore the current business plan.

Recruitment decisions and the associated costs going into this season will not cost the club it's future. There are many positives to work towards, namely a new stadium and the continued planned implementation of many new initiatives around the club.

The board is working through a plan that deals with the current issues and moves the club forward.

Due to the majority of current expenditure being player costs, the board proposed an optional contract reduction that would still give the players adequate remuneration and incentive but significantly contribute towards securing the clubs financial status.

Overall, the response from the vast majority of players and all of the coaching staff has been incredible, and the Board hugely appreciates this.

As a result of the request made of players earlier this week there will be some changes made to the squad with immediate effect. Further details will be announced over the coming days.

To reiterate, the club is in a fragile position but with the support of staff, volunteers, fans and the local business community the Board are confident of being able to turn the position of the club around and refocus on a sustainable business model for the future.

Further updates to follow. UTT.

How has it gone so badly wrong? Surely we’re not paying too much more on wages than last season? I get that fans have stopped going, but from where we were 12 months ago it looks like very worrying times indeed

Probably due to 6 out of our first 7 games being at home, all between january 30th and 3rd April when crowds are always going to be lower as the weather is worse and it clashes with the football season.

While we can criticise Chris and the club for the product on the pitch we have been dealt a shocking hand by the RFL off the pitch. At least if we had been given Haven at home earlier in the season we would have got a 2k+ crowd to boost the coffers but we had them at the rec in a rare away fixture.

It's all absolutely true what you have said but the bit i don't get is six weeks ago there was money for new players, now players wages are being cut. Has someone forgotten to add a zero on the spreadsheet or were they still convinced we would have this miraculous turn of form and nobody else would win a game?

The race is not always to the swift nor the battle to the strong, but thats the way to bet!

Yeh I was thinking about this . We’ve been well and truly shafted with the fixtures and we seen it right away . So many home fixtures in winter was terrible and just mystifying . We get to summer and they’re sparing and now at absolute peak time we’ve 5 away games … and at a time when we need the revenue . That must be a part in this now . We’ve not helped ourselves but that didn’t help us either

We are all loyal supporters so we have to stay positive, and cheer the boys on for the rest of the season. The club needs to regroup and start a fresh next year even though it will probably be in the lower division. We have been in bad financial situations in the past and always managed to carry on, so hopefully this won’t be any different. The new board members are putting things in place to help the club move forward, not burying their heads in the sand and hoping things will work themselves out!! UTT 💙🤍

I think a lot of you are missing the point.

the teams that take the field on a Sunday are just one piece of the jigsaw, but despite both clubs best efforts the other pieces of the jigsaw are missing and Town and Haven as independent clubs are always going to be in the bottom batch of clubs when it comes to playing budgets.

If for example Town and Haven had a players budget of £250k each, then combined that could be 400-500k which would make the clubs more competitive plus players could in theory anyway be cheaper as there's just the one local club to sign for.

As I see it:

  • This is all about putting in structures to ensure that there's still professional rugby being played in this area in the coming years, ensuring there's a coordinated development pathway from youth rugby through to open age and into the professional game.
  • Creating the same development platform for female rugby.
  • Creating stronger links with the community games by working with the various management groups to help them develop players and coaches alike as well as improving those clubs in the way they operate.
  • Consolidating and improving commercial opportunities

Neither Town or Haven have the finances or manpower to do this on their own, so we either carry on as we are and watch as players jump between the two clubs playing both off against each other for improved contracts, or they get their heads together and try to come up with a workable plan for the future and build a prosperous club from the base up!

As Derwent Parker says, if a merger was to happen, then no doubt there would be supporters of both teams who wouldn't watch a new side, certainly in the short term, but those supporters might be offset by a generation of new supporters and sponsors who would get behind the new venture.

So back to the Nr1 question that no one has ever had the answer for.... where would this merged team play?

Do Reds get a shiny new Stadium all to themselves?

The Board statement again leaves more questions than answers. This is obvious from the previous comments, issues and general dissatisfaction  posted on here.

The survival of the club will depend on the goodwill and support of fans and volunteers. That is why the Board must hold a public meeting,as the neighbouring Club have done, in order to be more open and accountable.

*explain more fully how we have got into this situation

*tell us their thinking about next season

*welcome fans' suggestions,(and in my opinion also offer a mechanism for fan representation, like happens at other clubs.
