France v Tonga

Ah, obviously seeking to appeal to the large Tongan community in Halfiax.

Both teams will be based here by then, and as far as I’m aware there isn’t a large Tongan diaspora in the UK, so why not have it in Halifax?

We're obviously appealing to how to put on an international tournament in the most budget way possible.

It's going so stereotypically retro that I'm expecting the entertainment at Old Trafford for the final to be some guys with giant inflatable sumo wrestlers on the backs running at each other.

When did the Shay become the New Shay?

Well they've developed some of the stands so it's kind of a new ground.

It's a classic Ship of Theseus situation. Or Trigger's brush if you will.

I was born to run a club like this. Number 1, I do not spook easily, and those who think I do, are wasting their time, with their surprise attacks.

Any place any time is good to watch Tonga

Tonga v Cook Islands in Middlesbrough looks like being one of the hardest sells of the whole tournament.

A smart organisation might look at a World Cup warm up game as being an opportunity to drum up interest and build some momentum.

It's a long way from Halifax to Middlesbrough.

We should be complaining. There's a home WC being played soon and now several international warm up games with more probably still be announced. Also, the warm games are easily accessible for a lot of us and might give some of us the opportunity to watch one of the nations we weren't going to watch live during the WC.

I agree.

It is very revealing that the whole programme is now based on reaching only existing fans.

I’m just looking forward to what’s next. I’m going Jamaica v Ireland at Bradford and PNG v Cook Islands in Widnes.

I was joking but I’m sure Widnes as as a club and fanbase did a fair amount when  that lad they signed passed away before he moved to them.

I don’t mind them sharing World Cup love with Halifax. Didn’t they get a big crowd for Tonga at the last one in England?

Yeah 11,000 v Italy

Not just this tournament, but the entire sport. The fishing net is getting smaller and smaller.

Having returned to England fairly recently I had thought I'd pick up some tickets for the RLWC, make a weekend of it I suppose and fit in 2 or 3 fixtures, but I can't say I'm enthused by it in any way. The whole game - on the field, in the stands, on TV, on here - looks and feels moribund and this tournament just seems to embody that.

The game is parodying itself at this point. I hope next year it can get back to full swing and this year is a “soft relaunch” of Internationals but it still doesn’t make sense to me playing France V Tonga in Northern England when the area is already hosting the vast majority of the World Cup. Also the minor detail that France are hosting the WC in 3 years so a higher profile game in France might be helpful.

Guys, it is a warm up game FFS, this is not a reason for an 'international rugby league is dead' thread. No teams are going to want to add to their existing travel requirements given the World Cup proper kicks off a week later. The teams involved have their opening games in Doncaster and St Helens so Halifax is a logical mid-point for a warm up.

And it's quite near my house so I will probably go.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

This would be absolutely fine if 90% of the matches weren't directly accessible within an hours drive from Halifax...

There is a huge concentration of games in particularly the Northwest, but also the broader M62 corridor as a whole. That is fine if the tickets are cheap and the aim is to get the relatively small RL matchgoing audience to go to several games boosted by curious associates. Not going to be easy with the games priced as they are.
