Thought I would just jump back into this thread again as it is going strong.

But for some reason it is now talking about the Premier League.

Leeds picked up plenty of yellow cards last season John no doubt but I wonder why, when they are such a dirty bunch they actually have one of the lowest tallies for those really dirty fouls that generate red cards?

You would imagine a team that was really dirty would have more?!

Oddly this season Leeds United have 13 yellow cards which is way off the pace of Man United on 20 who are on course for a new seasonal record of 127! Strange for such a dirty bunch to be so far behind.

You do realise that a YC in football is considerably closer to a penalty in RL than it is a card.

Do you go to games John or just watch on the telly and grub to forums?

Child was the wrong appointment for a fixture such as this. He's nowhere near the calibre of referee we need for Play Off rugby. He has just finished his period of being stood down after the shambolic officiating in the Leeds/Wiogan game at Headingly. Moore, the ref, was stood down for one week. Child the VR was stood down for six weeks. He ref'd the Wigan/Catalan game last week, his first game back.

After six weeks out he shouldn't be anywhere near the play offs.

The dis comm will have their work cut out this weeks and their finding will make interesting reading. Pity they can't discipline referees for utterly dreadful performances as in the Catalans/Leeds game.

One of the challenges Catalans have is that they have certain players who basically can't be calmed down.  Mcilorum is one of the worst,  but Tomkins also isn't far off him.

It's not unusual for Mcilorum to carry out serious foul play shortly after a ref has read the riot act and supposedly calmed things down.

He played for Queens on Burley road still got that culture

LOL at you shoehorning in a grievance about a dubious video ref call in your team's 30 point thrashing two months ago 😄

However a point about how the different styles of different referees impact games is more obviously true - whilst Child did things pretty much by the book, if Thaler and Child had swapped roles events would probably have turned out differently (Thaler being his usual more gobby, assertive self may have made Catalans snap out of their ill-disciplined malaise but I bet Leeds would likely still have won).

Not correct. He has refereed every week since the VR incident.
He was probably the calmest person in the Stadium and it was far from a dreadful performance but keep those prejudices of yours coming. It lightens the mood

As I’ve posted elsewhere I don’t think Thaler or anyone else would have made a difference to the attitude of the players on the night. They were more intent on petty niggling & wind ups than playing rugby.

Leeds were looking by far the better team prior to any nonsense.  That is no coincidence imo.

Just finished watching the NRL elimination play off game between the Rabbitohs and Roosters this morning.

7 sin bins.  Players running in to melee after melee mouthing off at each other.

The whole game was chaotic from start to finish.

No one blamed the ref.

Oh well, there you go.

The players act like idiots on both sides of the world and the ref gets the blame.

Depressing.

I googled in the hope that you were right.

It is disappointing but standard.

Also so glad we get the Fox coverage here.  All those quotes from the commentary team slagging off the ref came from the Nine coverage.  Not a word of criticism for the ref on Fox.

So, when you have finished eliminating all of the referees that you perceive have performed poorly, just who would you like to referee every game?

Assume everyone think Ashley Klein isn't competent as a referee either?

The contrast between that game and the Sharks/NQL game was stark, and it wasn't down to the referee but to the performance of the players and the respect that they showed towards the officials, even when they felt hard done by.

I'm out of the UK and couldn't be bothered working out a VPN so listened to The Continuous Call Team.

Would it surprise anyone that they were flabbergasted and felt Klein had lost the plot?

Doesn't surprise me at all.

All I could see on that pitch were players losing the plot. Klein was the only one with a cool head out there.

Child hadn't ref'd in SL, he'd been TJ and ref'd in the C'ship. He simply isn't good enough for play off games or C Cup Semis or Finals. He ref'd Wigan's semi and was abysmal, he was then given the Final and was again terrible. Wigan won the Cup in spite of Child. Yes my team won and I'm complaining about the ref! (John Monie's old quip.)

The RFL have a massive responsibility and their sending match officials on the same plane as Catalans opposition is staggering. Given they appoint a referee who is clearly not up to it and the Catalans crowd's sense of grievance came out in full. The Catalan club will have difficult questions to answer about various incidents but massive questions need to be answered by the RFL and their numerous misjudgements over this fixture.
