England Squad

I would have had both. I think having three players to fill two key positions (and I think winger is a key position in the modern game) is high risk.

Especially when you only have one centre in the squad who plays there for his club.

As I said in a previous post, I would have added another outside back instead of one of the props.  If we have any injuries we don't have a lot of flexibility.

I agree. In fairness to Wane, a 24-man squad for up to six games is pretty challenging and affords little luxury, but the squad doesn't seem to have a lot of utility players.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

Or Lomax, Dodd, Percival and Walmsley are injured and Roby’s no interest in playing internationally anymore. But yeah, don’t let the truth get in the way of a good lie.

I don't think you understand the meaning of the word 'majority'. Saints have five in the squad. Who are the other six Saints players who are fit and should be playing on top of that?

Knew I’d get some Saints fans biting at that 🎣 😂

You do realise Wane played for and coaches Wigan? Either that or someone has hacked your account.

You mean Watkins who played in the last WC final and nearly scored our only try of the game? - he has also played really well for Salford this season, almost back to his best.

We really do have a downer on our own players over here dont we.

As a centre ?

Ok I will say it. I would have had Connor in at centre.

I'd be tempted to have him on the bench. My opinion is still that we can't win a world cup by having high completion rates and being patient and kicking well. Other teams are better at that than we are, and have a bit of X factor to boot. Connor could be a liability, but he's also one of the very few players we have who can come up with a moment of brilliance that even the best defences in the world can't do anything about.

Full back: Tomkins, Welsby

Wing: Hall, Young,  Makinson

Centre: Farnworth, Pearce-Paul, Watkins

Half backs: Sneyd, Williams

Middle: Hill, Thompson, Burgess, Oledski, Lees, Cooper, Knowles, Radley

Edge: Whitehead, Bateman, McMeeken, Batchelor

Hooker: McIloram, Ackers

I keep going back to this as its the best and clearest way to look at it . I worry that two centres options are plying their trade now primarily as edge forwards , as we’ve seen that despite what some say centre and second row are very different positions and you can lack something offensively and get exploited defensively , especially laterally . It looks a specialist short . Did we need Lees and Cooper , with Radley and Knowles there as middles who can do hard yards as well . There seems a slight inbalance there . I think also we maybe could have added another half  , with Radley’s versatility to play 9 . Welsby seems to be covering fullback and halfback . Overall we can put out quite a strong matchday squad , but we really need good luck from here with injuries , especially where we are limited in depth and options

In fairness Shaun has picked what is available and thats pretty much it.

2nd in the group

Out in the Qtr or Semis

Final very much doubt it.

At least if we get to the semis it keeps the interest going, the Final should be a classic whoever gets there (Even better if its not Australia LOL:)

Paul

It should be the best two teams seeded to meet in the final, and that should have been done on the teams strength not some silly world rankings when teams have not been playing, the winners of the comp will be the winners of the semi between NZ and Aus a game that should have graced the final.

I broadly agree but the main reason I'd have had Connor in is that he would give Wane so many more options in each position. He could play centre, full-back or stand-off and nobody would strongly argue he was 'out of position'.

I'd have said the same about Ratchford but time has caught up with him over the last 1-2 seasons.

I do tend to agree with that. The story of the last 10 or so years has been the story of us trying to play the Aussie game and ultimately just not being as good at it as they are. Poor use and/or selection of backs and halves has epitomised this for me.

Wane does strike me as still being very much of that era, tactically at least.

Why is Ryan Hall in the squad? He is slower than my old granny now. He's big for the exit carries but that ain't what we need him for....unless we are picking him as a front rower?

If there is a chance of Handley playing he should be in the squad

Ellery’s well past it now BB.

Chuffed for Andy Ackers to be named in the squad, fully deserved.

Walmsley and Lomax will be missed.

What type of 9 is he? Good defender, Houghton type or quick ala peak Clarke?

I'd completely overlooked the fact that Clarke hasn't been picked. I know he has had a poor season but so have Warrington. On form he is the best hooker in SL, bar Roby.

Sneyd is nearly 32!! Are we really that bad for halves when Lomax is out? I have a feeling we will run with Williams and Welsby in the big games

I have a feeling that Sneyds long kicking will be seen as being even more important in the bigger games.

To be honest, I am delighted that we have picked a half back based on the strength of his kicking game and organisation.

Not been any mention of James Bentley, as a second row forward he can offer a lit more than those selected ahead of him, a bigger engine to keep going, a bit of mongrel, and a never say die attitude.

I was honestly scared to post this and an glad someone else has

If he was playing for Saints still he'd be there
