World cup - the bookies odds thread

Recommended Posts

They are changing all the time and there are some big variations between bookies

Most now have Samoa as favourites for the first match

Can someone explain why they can be favourites to beat us but are nearly twice the odds to win the whole tournament??

Australia.....3-5 to win.....must be the LONGEST odds they've been for years?

Samoa being favourites to beat England is honestly laughable. I think there just following crowd and I doubt anyone selecting the odds watches a single bit of superleague. Oh well it will be there loss when they lose money. England at 2.15$ is an enormous steal.

Where are you seeing that? I'm seeing them slight favourites to beat England and about the same for tournament overall.

Yup. Bet365, for example:

Samoa 9/1 for tournament, England 11/1.

Bookies just following the crowd. It’s quite funny actually, they’ll be for a shock when England dominate against tier 2 nations just like they have the last 114 years. It’s crazy how a few years off the international sways peoples opinion so much. They’ve just forgotten England are good it’s pretty funny.

I’m not sure how you split England and Samoa in the first game. It would be off scratch for me. Yes they have plenty of good players but so do we. Home advantage for us would bring it back level IMO, even if you were thinking of giving us a 2-4 point start (it’s 2.5 on Bet365). Samoa have the late-ish travel to contend with.

I can’t look past Australia at all to win the comp. That backline is far too good.

Not sure bookies work on sentiment or nostalgia. This will have been risk assessed quite thoroughly. Across a couple of threads you seem quite against the idea this Samoa side will do well this world cup. I get you watch SL but I believe i've seen you write you are in fact Australia, yet you back England harder than any Englishman on here. Not fibbing to us are you, Rooster, you big closet Pom! 🤣

anyone who thinks the bookies dont know what they are doing is a fool - they have specialist teams employed working out statistics and likelihoods of out comes from the width of the in goal to the size of the pack - "following the crowd" and "dont watch much  sl" well I  dont think so - this is a multi-billion-pound industry and its run like one

Agreed however....

Does the amount of money bet affect it?

I.e. if enough punters put massive amounts of Samoa does that shorten them up ( I have no idea myself)

Of course it does. Odds change all the time based on betting fluctuations. Large amounts of money being placed on Samoa will have shortened their odds.

I wish I shared your confidence, I did a few weeks back before so many players declared for them (which in itself is a ridiculous situation).

Remember a while back talking to a bloke who set the rugby league odds for some bookmaker. Can't remember the formula he used but do remember it being not particularly earth shattering.

Well if it was the guy who does the handicaps for skybet I wish he was coaching Warrington! The amount of times he has got it spot on is ridiculous!!

That was more or less my comment to him seeing that to me they seemed to get plenty pretty close.

Just because you think everyone hates you doesn't mean they don't.

If I was able to be impartial and not worry I might jinx the result, I'd agree. The reality is that this Samoa team haven't played together before and they'll be in the cold and wet of the north of England in front of a partisan crowd.

I'd be more worried for the return fixture in the semi-final.
