So, reflecting back on the game yesterday, here are the things I would take as positives. 1. The zero against the opposition.  The English defense was well organised and effective.  No big hits,

Well that was…wet

Fiji looked like they only just got off the plane

Dom Young has played himself in to contention

Traffic looked a horror show pre match, but park 10 minutes away and you’re on to a winner. I had the kettle on within 18 minutes of getting back to my car, and not a train in sight.

The kit is definitely the best away kit Scotland have never had

I didn't mean to take anything away from Cumbria. They obviously got the job done, and it is great to see them play their first game in 11 years.

I was more commenting on Jamaica from a World Cup perspective.  They look completely out of place in terms of a competition of WC status.

He already had. Wane has alluded to using the 2 big NRL guys on either edge. I wouldn't be surprised to see them on either wing for Samoa. Am not sure that Makinson offers more than them.

Makinson plays without any shadow of a doubt. His carries from our end will be absolutely huge. I have him as our best winger by a decent stretch (although Young has given me food for thought).

Sorry, are you suggesting using Farnworth on the wing? Can't see that. 

Feels pretty certain it'll be Young/Watkins and Makinson/Farnworth as the edge pairings.

I wasn't really suggesting it, just saying it wouldn't surprise me if Wane did it.

I think you are right though - he will split the big NRL guys up on to either edge with Farnworth in the centre feeding Makinson.

Has to be.  Farnworth is the only specialist club centre in the squad.

This will be the backline.  The key decisions are elsewhere.

Are you joking. Makinson is literally one of the best wingers in the whole world why would England not play him. Wayne Bennett has said himself that Tommy Makinson is the best winger in the world.

I really don't think Jamaica did have a lot more top players though, I think that's a bit of a bizarre assertion.

Golding and Lawrence are the only two SL players for Jamaica - Lawrence played less than half the season and Golding is mostly a utility or backup in the current Giants side. The rest of the players come from various sides in the Championship, League One and the Jamaican domestic league.

Cumbria meanwhile had a regular starter from a top 2 SL team in Singleton, plus the experienced Amor who also had a handful of SL games this year, with the rest of the side coming from overwhelmingly the Championship and plenty from one of the top Championship sides in Barrow.

I know England fans trot this out ad nauseum, but what are you personally basing your comment on? Which games specifically?

The guy is 30 years old, and has played a grand total of FIVE international matches in his career. 3 of those were against New Zealand in 2018. Apart from that he has run out against combined Super League "all stars" (sic) teams a couple of times. 

He has never played in the NRL and has played a couple of World Club Challenge games, lost both, include a savage beating by the bunnies in 2015.

He also has never played for Great Britain. 

So which games were these performances where he showed he "is literally  one of the best wingers in the world"?

Are you talking about Super League matches against teams like Huddersfield  Giants? Where St Helens have about 75% possession and zero pressure? Or Cup games against Whitehaven and York City Knights?  

I'd love to know. As far as I can see he has hardly ever played against top quality opposition. Young and Farnworth have played more games against real opposition than this guy has in his entire career!

Makinson is good though. Let's see if he changes your opinion in this World Cup.

Don't rule someone out because they haven't played in the NRL.

NRL: Hodgson, for example,  is (was?) a superstar: over here, not so much. I'd never really paid any attention to him until he went to Canberra. And, even then, I thought he was well down the pecking order of British hookers.

Plus, not played many international matches? Well, there's a reason for that. Nobody in Rugby League seems too keen on playing international matches. Primary culprits: Australia.

I'm not saying he isn't good. Definitely a decent winger, works hard on the early carries, good finisher etc etc. 

I just wonder what performances the Roosters fan is basing this "literally one of the best in the world" stuff on. It gets trotted out a lot, but it seems utterly without any foundation when you look at the guy's career, and who he has played against.

What about his golden boot for being the best player in the world? - you may not agree (as he doesn't play in the NRL) but the record books show he was the best player in the world that year.

Its funny how NRL fans say Wayne Bennet is the best coach ever- yet when he says Makemson is the best winger in the world and an amazingly good player ( as he has managed him) suddenly Bennets opinion doesn't matter....
