All about GB/England home match attendances

Recommended Posts

As I pointed out on the England match thread, yesterday's attendance was the 4th highest England home attendance ever and the highest against a team other than Australia or New Zealand. I thought I would expand this research to include GB home attendances as well.

So a few facts to kick us off; GB and England have had 46 home match attendances over 30,000. 15 of these have been over 40,000 (which is why I'm doing this as top 15).

Of these 46 matches, only 2 have been against a nation other than Oz or NZ. The first of these was against Wales on 21 October 1995 when we got 30,042 at Old Trafford. The other match was of course yesterday's. 6 of the matches were against NZ and 38 of the 46 were against Australia.

The highest attendance against NZ was 67,545 on 23 November 2013 at Wembley. The highest attendance against Australia was 73,631 on 24 October 1992 at Wembley, this being the highest home attendance and also the only one over 70,000.

9 of these matches were at Wembley (old or new). 8 were at Elland Road. 7 were at Headingley. 7 were at Station Road. 5 were at Odsal. 5 were at Old Trafford. 2 were at Olympic Stadium. 1 was at the Etihad. 1 was at St James' Park. 1 was at Twickenham.

If we include Cardiff, and I'm going to as England cricket do, then 11/15 of England's highest attendances are outside the heartlands.

Just for the next time someone says that 2/3 of a Test series must must must be off an M62 junction.

So, in 1995, 2013 and most likely this year, we've achieved two 40,000+ attendances outside the heartlands within a few weeks of each other. However, they were still about a month apart.

Could we get these numbers outside the heartland 2 weeks in 3, or even back to back? I'm not sure.

Although I am sure we'd certainly at least match the numbers done in heartland tests, where, if I'm correct, the highest GB/Eng attendance in the last 20 years was 39k at Elland Road for the Tri-nations final.

Confident we'd do at least that at Spurs and Newcastle for an Ashes series.
