Yes, this is why it's such a disaster. Not simply because England lost, but the consequences that will follow.

Its a result almost as poor for Northern Hemisphere RL as the drubbings many NH sides have taken this world cup during the group stages.

I’m not sure how you can include Young and Williams in the below standard group, Young made one mistake that didn’t cost us and Williams was the only creative half on the field.

McIlorum was poor and Welsby played like he’d bet his house on Samoa to win

Yep, agreed. Williams was very good! Set up two tries didn’t he?

Disappointing result but it was a cracking contest on prime-time FTA television on a Saturday afternoon with plenty of watchers. Plenty of drama, great atmosphere and good entertainment served up. Samoa deserved the victory today and will be great for RL in that part of the world.

Indeed, Samoa were gifted every try really and all came from bad England mistakes, either directly or shortly before.

Too many players lost their heads completely, particularly the playmakers who needed to compose things and play the percentages. Welsby, Tomkins and Williams seemed to be having a personal battle as to who could set up the most tries from kicks, no matter the tackle count, instead of just building pressure.

That Samoan team will tire easily, England barely kept the ball to do that and we played right into their hands.

Williams got tacked with the ball on the 4th too much so England without a halfback on 5th tackle plays. That’s poor

Right now you have in SH

  • Aus
  • NZ
  • PNG
  • Samoa
  • Tonga
  • Fiji

If your one of the above sides, why do you need to play England any more? RL is not a money earner in NH its a minority sport, so you not going to make much money coming to play NH teams, so why would you want to be bothered touring England any more.. This is not good at all for the Future of RL in the NH

Internationals in England make far more money in England than elsewhere and always have done.

Certainly did in the game I watched. One very poor pass early on, after which he took the line on time and again while Welsby hid as far away as possible.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

That factor has encouraged exactly 1 of those teams to come here (outside of the world cup) since the end of 2016.

Massive result for international rugby league. The development of Tonga and Samoa in recent years has been superb and here’s the rewards.

If that’s not a massive reason as to why we need the mid-season internationals in the Southern Hemisphere and why England need to actually play international rugby league, I don’t know what else is?

Defeat to a poor, tiny country less populous than Southampton is a "massive result" and the development of such countries is "superb" is it?  What planet do you live on?

Get real, having a team from such a no-account country get past the group stages let alone reach the final is only going to showcase how minuscule the game's footprint in the world is and there's nothing good about that.

No.

But now, NH RL will be regarded as even more inferior than it already is.

It's not next week that the effects will be felt but in the coming years.

I think when the World Cup count is 12-1, They know we’re inferior.
I do not like saying that, but it’s stating the bleeding obvious.

Was it worth taking Ryan Hall to the World Cup to just play against France and Greece?

Wouldn't his experience been more important in the pressure games?

I get the arguments for Young to play today but Hall's experience would have suited us better with hindsight of course

The English game/player pool is inferior, getting to the WC final wouldn’t change that.

it really isn’t a disaster more of a wake up call

It's both, and the sad fact is that English RL is incapable of changing things.
