It's only 12 days away. Long time since the last Boxing Day derby and unless the weather improves it might not be on.

I'm going for:

Batley 32 Us 22

2,401

Paul Sykes red card 65 minutes

Apparently it’s to get a bit milder from next, whether that covers the Christmas period who knows. Hard to predict as we’ll have quite a few making their debut.

I'll go:

Batley 28 Rams 18

att 1865

Given that we have never seen most of these players in a Dewsbury shirt before, Batley have greater continuity so their players will be more familiar with their moves, Batley should be further on with their pre-season, and we are a C1 side up against a top, top Championship side it is tough to predict.

Dewsbury win by 10, then.

Not sure how we (Batley) will approach Dewsbury's biggest game of the season. I calculated the average score against Dewsbury this season and go with that...

Dogs 84

Dewsbury 2

Christmas Day will be a relatively warm one compared with Boxing Day when we shall need to wrap up well against the elements-and probably a soggy pitch,, after recent rainfall, for the players to enjoy.

The weather will make no difference to the result though, even if Batley do use all their registered players as could be the case with their injuries and illnesses, they will still win.

Batley 44-12 Dewsbury

FTS: Dixon

MoM: Restall

Att: 1240

Legs, Dews, Legs.

A fair result. Great effort from the Rams against a much bigger pack. Think Carr, Greensmith and Whiteley did especially well. Callum Turner tried hard, kicked well but played like a full back filling in at scrum half. Maybe a few more games and Sykes coming back will improve things.

But no offloads and unable to create a try through structured play in the whole game. With Ferguson, Sykes, Dixon and others to come, we will be stronger come the start of the league season.

Can’t disagree with that.

Thought Greensmith had his best game in a Dewsbury shirt today. His handling looked more secure than last year and he was running it well and tackling hard.

Bags of effort, commitment and enthusiasm against a more experienced side. Clearly taking moves and structures from the training ground to the pitch still requires a fair bit of work but it will come.

I only recognised about five of the players and spent half the time squinting to read their names, so it is difficult to pick out individuals who played particularly well. One real crunching tackle by a beefed-up Sam Day stood out as did the organisational efforts of Restall. As WR says Turner did well but doesn't look like a natural scrum half.

Overall a promising performance which bodes reasonably well for the league season, when it eventually starts.
