2023 Season

Couldn’t agree more that it’s all looking positive for the new season.

When we lost some thirteen players from last season for various reasons, it appeared that the wheels had really fallen off. Some years ago we had the same scenario when we stopped paying players contract money whether they played or not. The result was a mass exodus from the club but, hey ho, Hornets continued nontheless.

With a good blend of youth and experience I feel we are going to be very competitive in this division if the team can stay healthy.

With our great coaching and backup staff and good people running the club let’s get behind our team in big numbers.

RUGBY LEAGUE WITHOUT ROCHDALE HORNETS IS LIKE AN UNSHARPENED PENCIL, THERES NO POINT?

It should be a very competitive competition this time , injuries will play a part for all teams . It seems a very good squad to me with some quality signings. Good luck to lads.

Looking very good and excellent new kit: https://hornetsrugbyleague.co.uk/article/1192/hornets-unveil-new-kits-for-2023

The reduction in League 1 clubs (not surprising with WW) is worrying and surely a new format below SL will emerge for next season?

I like the new home shirt, that looks great.

Well, a 6-46 loss……hope that clears at least most of the cobwebs, with a some encouragement for the travelling Hornets and the coaches.

STRAUGHEIR: 'IT’S ONLY GOING TO MAKE US STRONGER'

Despite defeat at the DCBL Stadium in the opening pre-season outing, plenty of positives were seen from Gary Thornton's new-look Rochdale side.

Tommy Porter dived over late on to open Hornets' try scoring account for 2023, however, the Championship outfit proved to be too clinical for Rochdale as Joe Edge scored 22-points including a hat-trick.

Hornets' Straugheir, who was one of many debutants in Cheshire, believes the loss against a strong Vikings squad will only make Hornets 'stronger' and that Rochdale were not far-off Widnes psychically.

"There wasn't a massive difference in the contact," said Straugheir.

“Yes, they were quicker than us at ruck speed and things like that but every try went round us; nothing came through us so that’s a positive we can fix up.

"The score line did not reflect the good performance we put in."

Rochdale started both half's positively, however, three tries in five minutes saw John Kear's side lead 40-0 after 55 minutes.

Vikings' squad contained former Super League forwards Kyle Amor and Matty Fozard, and Straugheir believes part of the errors came mentally.

He said: “We’ve just got to be a bit smarter, to control the ruck, slow things down.

“Those things we’ll look at but it’s great to play against this level opposition, especially people like Kyle Amor who only two years ago was playing in a Grand Final so it’s good.”

Good interview with Gary Thornton https://youtu.be/ASe9njGNVsU

Reference to a game with Salford on Sunday......(time and place soon?)....maybe with a Brodie Croft appearance!

Well, this is unique😎🙈😭but who will be tweeting to whom, about what, wherever it is?

This fixture, (on Sunday, with Salford reserves)  is behind closed doors, and not open to the general public. Live tweets will be available.”

1st League match on Sunday 1pm and a tough test for our largely ‘youthful’ and promising team.

Last weekend Doncaster scraped home v Oldham, after being 18-0 down………video https://t.co/M5BHbbTI60

Wrap up well as the forecast is 4 degrees and sleet before and during the match. 🥶

Summer rugby league eh ?

Thought we were very good against Skolars. Our speed of the ball and ruck speed was surprising, not many teams will be able to keep up with that for the full 80. What was also impressive was how we didn't really get riled up by any of London's tactics.

Doncaster will be tough as they are one of the favorites for promotion so a win against them will be a good marker for the rest of the season.

Appeared to be a good Hornets performance today; Dons' late 6 points to cement their 20-10 victory. A few missed chances, including missed conversions, in difficult conditions at key moments?

Trust everyone who braved the cold is recovering.

Another tough one next week away in the cup v Dewsbury

The team that made the least mistakes won, as is usual in rugby league. Our relative youth and lack of experience showed.  Running the ball into touch on the first tackle on our 25 was fatal. The game was in the balance at that point. They scored a converted try from the scrum right after and it was game over.

We never gave up at any point and played some great rugby at times. With a bit of luck we could have just pipped them.

It would appear today that Dewsbury had far too much Championship experience for Hornets?  Hope our lads had a decent following and they will still be in good voice for the trip to Oldham in two weeks.  League 1 is a tough place.

Your team weren't disgraced at all and kept at it right till the end. Experience and size in the pack were the main differences.

Sadly, it looked like a very poor crowd today with as many from Dewsbury as from Rochdale and we aren't one of the best supported clubs by any means.

Good luck for the rest of the season.

Sport, amongst other things, is a dream-world offering escape from harsh reality and the disturbing prospect of change.
