"It involves matters much greater than drafting the new rules...the original and existing games have their own powerful appeal to their players and public and have the sentiments which history inspires"  - Harold 'Jersey' Flegg 1933

"Just as we had been Cathars, we were treizistes, men apart."

Good start

Interesting this given the role of L’Équipe in the gradual decline of French RL.

Well done whoever brought that about, hopefully IMG moving and shaking or any other "ing" capitalists get up to with one another.

RL disappeared from their pages for years.

OK - so they are somehow to blame for the decline of a sport, despite having no involvement in it?

Surely they (as a commercial concern) will report on a sport that there is demand for among their readership? League in France is played in a handful of villages. Why should l'Équipe report on something that doesn't make commercial sense?

You really imagine those two things are not connected?

Your argument makes perfect sense even if your conclusion doesn't.

You could read up on the history of French RL though and then you can still imagine it was a simple commercial decision.

But thank you by the way.

What a bizarre mindset, blaming a newspaper for a sport going nowhere.

Even if they did have some kind of agenda to make a sport decline, the impact of absence from 1 publication would be absolutely miniscule compared to the ongoing mismanagement of the sport itself, the impact of other sports, the ambition of League clubs (were they getting the game into schools via sections sportives etc etc) , the access to the pôle  espoir system, was the federation promoting the game in universities? How much support did they get from their far larger neighbour?  The list of reasons is endless. And this is without taking into account the nazis etc, and simply looking at the state League was in 40 years ago, to where it is now.

The game has been run shambolically in France for 4 decades!!

Yet somehow, you manage to blame a newspaper. How typically "rugby league" of you.

It’s up to Rugby League to get media coverage.

Media outlets aren’t going to cover a minority sport that’s of little interest to their audience just because it exists.

Lots of RL fans do seem to struggle with this concept.

Ancient history that has zero impact on the here and now.

Do you seriously think that media outlets are going to cover a sport that their audience has little interest in? It’s up to RL to get in their faces, playing the victim is only of interest to those who love to seek a grievance.

DS I was of a mind to reply in the negative but you're absolutely correct history has no baring on the present and should be ignored altogether and anyone who claims it to be so must just have a chip on both shoulders.

YTSH!

It's on l'équipe internet site not on the terrestrial TV channel,

Bein just walked away

Neither of those two facts seem particularly worth celebrating - unless I'm missing something ??

For eg:

Why on earth if L'équipe is covering/filming the game online would they not also show it on their terrestrial TV channel??

And if Bein has walked away, does that mean they no longer show NRL and SL matches as well??

I didn't blame the newspaper, I said they played a role. The real problem is people not understanding the deprivation of media driven oxygen for activities of any kind. This is understandable as there are so few examples to illustrate where RL has been ignored or sidelined or ridiculed. The evidence just isn't there for an informed opinion.

Knowing France that's hardly surprising.

L'équipe live will be showing sky feeds, bein still shows the NRL (free) the super League games where part of the showing Catalan games deal so they no longer sjo Super League, (catalan paid the production costs for bein)

BeIn are going with just NRL this season I believe, Keith.

I was hoping the L'équipe would have been in talks with TO too. I know there were talks early last season. At least a couple of matches would have been good this season, if they were still in SL it may have been different. With the IMG proposals a TV deal that covers more than just Catalans would have gone down well for the future of TO. I don't get a chance to talk about it last night after the game, we were discussing the growth..or lack of..of the TO rugby club as a whole and where the priorities should lie.
