Question for Leeds Supporters

Recommended Posts

I have come across a game between Leeds and Moscow at Headingley won by Leeds 34-16 however I can't find what year this was or if it was a friendly or in a cup game.

Any long term Leeds supporters able to shed some light on this game?

Leigh played Lokomotiv Moscow in the CC back in 2002 , and Strella Kazan a few years after that

I went(I think). The Russian team were solid as i remember. Not too clever with the ball but resolute in defence until any sort of break/half break when that was that. No pace to recover the situation which was a shame as they were hard work to break down otherwise.

What year? Not even sure which decade it was.

Guessing I would say around 1990.

The Leeds team from what I can make out from the commentary was

G.Spencer

Wilson

S.Irving

??

N.Francis

G.Jones

M.Rowse?

P.Worthy

M.Smithson

D.Young

N.James

S.Hill

G.Middleton

Subs:

F.Maloney

P.Mitchell

Gill?

??

The ref was Fred Lindop

The Russians warmed up before the game with half their team doing a number of forward rolls on the field.

It was 4th May 1990 at Headingley. Two days before we lost to Widnes in the semis of the Premiership.

Thanks for that. Couple of final questions, was it the Leeds senior team or Alliance?

Were the team from Moscow the Magicians or just Moscow?

I was at the match and stayed at the Hilton Hotel (Where the ruskies were put up)

They Brought over 500 Glasnost T/Shirts and sold them all for £ 5 each and with the money purchased the entire Beatles back catalogue along with several hundred TDK cassettes and some shoes.

I took them to HMV in Leeds to buy the fab 4 records.

Breakfast was a laugh i remember the players putting yoghurt on bacon and sausages you name it they piled it on.

One player was crying that he had managed to purchase a wonderful pair of shoes.

A far cry from nowadays Russia which has been turned into a hellhole by Putin and his cronies in the old days everyone just got on.

It was a friendly, 1990, Moscow were touring and playing friendly games, I'm sure I have a programme from the game somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it out.

Must admit I found this thread a Jolly Good Read...

To paraphrase Gary Lineker, Leeds have always been a team to preferably watch on Teletext.
