NRL GF in Melbourne or Perth?

Recommended Posts

With recent news that either elected government would be kybosh all ideas for suburban stadium upgrades in favour of improving the health system, the victorious Labour Party confirmed their election promise, promoting the NRL to almost immediately announce that the NRL GF is now open to bidding from all states, cities and venues.

I suspect the only city to be a real threat in the first few years would be Brisbane, but, an interesting politics v sport story to come.

The NSW government has just paid the A League(football) 15 million for the rights to host their grand final for the next 3 years in Sydney, despite opposition from fans.

I can see this happening because money obviously talks. And if the A League final goes for 5 million per year. Then other state governments will be willing to pay a premium for the NRL grand final and see it as investment.

Moving the NRL GF around is a great idea. It’s a sport for all Australians (and NZers).

Why would you have it 4 hours flight away from where all the fans are though? It would be like playing a Man Utd v Chelsea Champions League final in Moscow, oh hang on…

Not a chance, just another case of V’Landys sulking because he hasn’t got his own way.

You’re right about the sulk, but if the NRL is now up for tender, don’t be surprised if Brisbane throw the chequebook at them.

That was the old NSW government though. The new one is less likely to hand at money for sports events

To be fair football is very popular there, that's not the same argument as holding a Rugby league game in Melbourne or Perth where it is a small, but growing, sport.

I think they are definitely still interested in paying money for events, for there is an immediate financial return, whereas a positive financial return for investment in suburban stadium upgrades is still very speculative.

Sure, it will make for growth in the construction industry, but, that is an industry the state government would much prefer being utilised for residential needs.

An NRL GF would easily sell out in Melbourne or Perth.

The last state of origin match in Perth sold out easily.

Australia about to hold a referendum on an aboriginal voice in parliament. They should add a second question

”Are you in favour of the NRL grand final being played at a cricket/AFL ground?”

From what I've read the Victorian government is willing to pay for it. NRL fans in Australia are very annoyed though, they want it played in a rectangle stadium not an oval. Which is fair enough
