Any Super League ground with grassed terraces or slopes ?

Recommended Posts

Can't say I've ever seen any in my few visits to SL games or grounds or via TV coverage.

Watching most of my live NRL level games at either Suncorp or Cbus Stadium (Gold Coast) I do wonder how long the game here in Oz will persist with suburban grounds with non allocated grassy seating.

Can't imagine any EPL grounds have them nor NFL.  Professional rugby clubs in the UK with own ground ?

Tradition v Progress I guess.

It's never been a thing in the UK.

Not 100% accurate actually.

Wigan Athletic’s Springfield Park, momentarily occupied by Springfield (formerly Balckpool) Borough, had a grass hill and this video is evidence of why it’s not “a thing” in the UK. Safe standing it is not!

I was trying to think of a ground that had a bank like that and utterly failed to do so.

Arundel cricket (Sussex play occasional games there) was the closest I got but that doesn't really count.

It could happen as soon as next year...Sheffield Eagles, currently riding high in third place in the Championship and thus promotion candidates, have a steep grassy bank all the way along one side of the pitch and also at one end. Mind you it's so steep it's actually not very comfortable to stand anywhere other than right at the top or the bottom of the bank.

Pretty sure the safety at sports ground act would have a thing or two to say about the maximum capacity for standing on a muddy bank.

Lovely little ground for the club back in Sheffield finally, but it doesn't meet SL entry standards so they can't go up as it stands.

They'd play at Bramhall Lane if it got to that stage this year

Batley, Fartown and Crown Flatt all had grass/ash standing areas behind the goals didn't they?

And the Athletic Grounds, Rochdale had a grass hill at the scoreboard end and grass banks at each end of the ‘railway side’ stand.

Really? Well, that would take the heat off Huddersfield on here at least 😆

I don't think they expect to need that to be the case!

There was a plan years ago to make it into a proper slope for fans to use, that 3 days a year we get actual sun.

I seem to remember standing in a little shed atop a grass hill at Alfreton Town watching Trinity against Mansfield Marksmen in the 80's.  Not an RL ground as such but I'm sure we stood on a grass bank.

Its probably a climate / cultural thing, there are certainly none in the UK.

On or off the pitch? 😊

I can remember people standing to watch games on it in the 70s by the old scoreboard, was much steeper then before they cut half of it away to reshape the speedway track.

There's a little ridge down one bit at the Trailfinders. Fine for small crowds, but when Leeds came and it was rainy it was quite dangerous.

Bit of a niche issue this but I used to love standing on that side at Trailfinders as from an acoustic point of view it was tremendous in terms if being to hear the players' shouts and calls, hardly any fans used to stand there and you could hear every word said by the players, at least on that side of the pitch.

Dewsbury had one at each end, behind the sticks, used to be a good place to watch and the kids played on it,whilst the parents watched. They were forced to shut after a Widnes fan slipper over, even hough it was closed due to wet weather .He was injured and got paid out , but. due to this insurance costs for the banking were increased and the council stated they were too steep to stand on. One is terraced now the other is just travel but not in use.

They were no where as steep as the semi mountain at sheffield,

Uk H&S laws wouldn't allow it these days (its amazing that they are still allowed in Oz to be honest) - saying that Whitehaven do their best to let their fans stand on weeds and grassed covered terracing.....
