State of Origin: Game I - NSW v QLD (Adelaide)

Was that the one where the Queensland player was on the deck and the NSW player lined up and smashed him in the head with a forearm?

Thought that was disgusting but barely got a mention

Yes. And amazing that commentators just ignored it. Glad Queensland got the result after that, especially as the ref decided to use the sin bin late on for a nothing tackle which wasn't a shoulder charge and ended up being a clash of heads.

Wasn't a classic by any means - but a none classic Origin game is still a good game.  And nothing wrong with some rugby on a Wednesday morning!

As for the game.  I thought NSW really let themselves down in the first 20 with indiscipline.  And that's not the typical SOO indiscipline of being too physical... taking a catcher out in the air, a ball steal with multiple players in the tackle... just daft penalties that gave possession and field position to Queensland early in the game which they exploited to take a 10-0 lead.

After that it was more NSW but I think Queensland deservedly held on for a win especially with all the disruption they had on the edges and then with the late sin bin.

Not sure who the offical player of the match was but Reece Walsh was the stand out for me - just a rock at the back and dangerous with the ball in his hands.

Reuben Cotter was the official Man of the Match.

just watched the one hour highlights show that seemed to be constant video ref decisions - captains challenge - video replays of suspect tackles - stoppage for this stoppage for that - was the game more flowing in real time? cos the one hour highlights were instantly forgettable - over hyped to death by the looks of it

Yes, it certainly felt like a game that never really got going.

What I find frustrating is that the commentators never really acknowledge when a State of Origin game is a bit of a damp sqiub... every series and every game has to be described as faster, more intense and better than ever before.  It comes across as a bit insecure if anything.

He played well and far a large part away from his normal middle position on the right edge.  Well deserved.

I know we don’t get channel 9 coverage usually , but it was interesting that they had an advert come on actually during the game . Don’t know if that’s a usual thing , pretty bizarre

Inglis' best position was five-eighth, I would put Latrell at five-eighth, I've never thought that Luai was an Origin player.

My NSW backline would be N Hynes, L Mitchell, B To'o, T Trbojevic, C Graham, J Addo-Carr, J Tedesco

Just looking through the game stats on NRL.com, a few things that stand out to add to my impression of the game.

Reuben Cotter worked his socks off and deserved the Man of the Match (although I thought Walsh was in with a shout) but Patrick Carrigan showed again that he is made for representative rugby with another big game - he ran hard all game was a forward who regularly won contact and found a quick play the ball.

I thought that Tabuai-Fidow may have been a bit of a weak link in Origin and not up to the physical challenge but he did well, topping the run metres for Queensland.

For NSW Tedesco was good and tried hard all night - put in a big stint with 217 running metres and the most tackle breaks for the Blues.

Another I thought who vindicated his selection was Jarome Luai.  While I thought Queensland read him quite well for the most part, he tried hard all night and the fact is that NSW only had two line break assists and two try assists all game - and all four were Luai.  I was dissappinted with Nathan Cleary, it felt like with Walsh picking off his kicks he didn't have too much else in his game to fall back on.

The big debate in the build up was Luai or Hynes to partner Cleary but I think Cleary and Hynes are probably too similar and both play at 7 for their clubs.  It won't happen because Cleary is the golden child of the NRL but an option for game 2 is Hynes and Luai.

I’m a big Tedesco fan but I thought it was his worst performance in a Blues shirt, especially defensively.

I thought both the NSW halves were poor, especially given the possession & field position they were given, leaving Haynes on the bench for nearly 70 mins was criminal from Fittler who’s Origin coaching career must surely be over if they lose game 2.

It was weird and I'm not sure they were ready for it. Why show adverts for Channel 9 programming?

One of the adverts used the word 'pr*ck' and sky hastily added an apology for inappropriate language.

It really wasn’t,he was arguably the best centre in the game & an outstanding fullback

Siri, show me a post which shows how rugby league fans are the worst people to promote rugby league.

Inglis would have been awesome in every position except hooker. But I think he would have been most effective for a team at five-eighth. That's just my opinion and Matthew Elliott the former Bradford and Raiders coach said it years ago.

It’s the postcode of each player’s junior club where they first played the game.

One of the things that is said hampered our fta broadcast deal (and threatens to hamper future ones especially when cf. to our main rival)) is the lack of opportunities for adverts during the game. A situation only exacerbated now through the game often running for several minutes without a stoppage. Ironic isn`t it, game is as popular as ever but broadcasters can`t find space to capitalise and squeeze ads in.

I don`t have a problem with these sidebar ads (lets call them that) or ones that run at the bottom of the screen, as long as they are not overdone. The game`s gotta earn a quid.

To the NRL,7k empty seats for their flagship & self proclaimed biggest event in the sport.

Bit of a cheap dig there Davo5.  Are you from NSW or QLD and are against SoO being held outside of those states?

IMHO a crowd of 48,613 - which was 4,970 below capacity - that included me, wife and daughters was a bl00dy good effort in a state where RL is hardly ever mentioned.

As a comparison the crowd was only 349 attendees lower than the first AFL ‘Showdown’ of the season between Port Adelaide and Adelaide Crows - which is supposedly the biggest sporting event in SA and accompanied by wall to wall, over the top media for weeks before the game.

Listening to the radio this morning it was interesting that the presenters and people calling in were moaning about how the presentation of SoO at Adelaide Oval was far more exciting, extravagant etc. than for Port or the Crows.

In the close games Queensland will always win, they always seem to score the last try regardless of the score line and always have more passion. New South Wales has some guys who just want to play Origin, every Queensland player wants to play for Queensland.
