sam4731 Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 Andy Last: Castleford Tigers sack head coach after falling to bottom of Super League - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-league/66412788
Zilla Budgie Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 Wow, Don't think this 'head coach' thing suits him... irrespective of his coaching skills.
SUPERSTUD Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 It was never going to work from the very first day the Hull contingent rocked up. Lee Radford and his best buddies Lasty, Wilson and Rob Nickolay or whatever his name is. All were previous failures at Hull FC and Wilson was part of the infamous extremely costly Hull FC/ Hull KR joint academy partnership which went belly up. Wilson is a ride along coat tailor like with the England youth set up. He is certainly no director of rugby. The Cas fans hated them from day one and will be glad to see them all eventually gone. The board or whoever sanctioned it have got these appointments massively wrong. This could set the club back years. 1
Whippet13 Posted August 4, 2023 Posted August 4, 2023 Speculation will obviously be Darryl Powell to return immediately, and I think it is possible as he didnt leave on bad terms.
Josef K Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 Lasty gone!!!, dear dear poor poor Lasty I loved Lasty you know, we all did. 1
Gomersall Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 What’s the record for the most coaches in one season? Are the protesting Cas fans still at the Jungle? I need to know.
JohnM Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 (edited) Maybe Last has had a lucky escape. Don't really know much about him but perhaps he was too nice a guy to coach at an earthy club like Cas. He'd a couple of years left on his contract, maybe. If so, he should take his time in deciding what to do next and where to do it. I don't know if he has another skillset so maybe he should look at other options. Edited August 5, 2023 by JohnM
PREPOSTEROUS Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 Shame, I thought he was doing a great job. Odd time for him to be binned after the big recruitment drive over the past week but then I appreciate Powell only went last week so it's more the opportunity to get him in that's the main catalyst rather then the poor form. Who else is there? 1 1

And if they get relegated who know's how many years that will be, surely their facilities will let them down on the IMG scoresheet, and the best way to maintain SL status is to be in SL not by trying to get into it from the division below after this season. 3
Agbrigg Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 Powell is not getting any younger and quite wealthy by all accounts. The last couple of months at wire must have been stressful, does he really need another pile of grief right now ?

No, this now screams only one man: short-term specialist Kear to his boyhood club.
Chronicler of Chiswick Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 A chance to get Danny Ward back from the Dark Side? Harry Stottle makes a good point about facilities - can Cas afford to go ahead with the Jungle rebuild if they're relegated?
The Hallucinating Goose Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 I'd personally have gone for, 'Last out of the jungle', as the title of this thread. 1

Hard to see either Cas or Wakey getting back in SL in front of Fev if they were to go up this season. For one of those teams this year is going to be a total disaster that could ruin the club for decades. 1 1

Wakey now have far superior facilities to Fev, Far bigger club all round and if all goes smooth one of the richest backers in SL soon to takeover. IF Wakey do drop down they will soon get back up. 3

If thats all true then it might be perfect timing for them having wasted millions for as long as most of us can remember. Like OG says though I wouldn't bank on coming straight back up if Fev take their place. The IMG criteria is heavily weighted in favor of the teams already holding the positions.
Agbrigg Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 Look chaps, I know very little about Halifax but I do know quite a bit about Wakey. I have also spoken to people involved in the takeover and know them well. We have already made massive strides with the ground and the plans and money will be available to vastly improve the squad. I obviously would not like to get relegated as it will put us back a season. However if Matt Ellis completes the takeover we will be a club with a far healthier future than many of the others. 3

It's related to a planning gain, much like Trinity's. Axiom get planning for what they want, they give Cas the money, combined with £2m from the council, the funding should be ring fenced regardless of their status. 1

We can see what has been spent on the ground and very impressive it looks, but to make sure you take those facilities into SL why wait to make money "available to vastly improve the squad" does that indicate the money will only be forthcoming if SL status is acheived? Seems silly that if money is available why it has not been put to good use to ensure you are not relegated this term.

What’s holding up the takeover? It seems to have been rumbling along for a while 1
