The Borough of St Helens is now a part of the recently founded Liverpool City Region which started in 2014. It's a broad area which encompasses over 2 million people. St Helens over the years have presided over various initiatives in Liverpool city itself but I wouldn't really say they have made a big push in the city.

St Helens being part of the city region does give them more justification to adopt Liverpool as a catchment area and incorporate it into the club name. I know that I'll get shouted down by everyone on this site but I do think that a renaming of the club to Liverpool St Helens would benefit the sport and the club hugely, opening up the club and RL to a  much wider audience.

The sport and RL clubs shouldn't be afraid to evolve over time and needs to proactively compete with other sports and social media to stay in the public consciousness.

Catalan Dragons is a merger of local rivals St Esteve, St Cyprien and XIII Catalan they were not afraid to do something different and now they are one of the most successful clubs in the northern hemisphere.

I'm particularly keen to see what Saints fans think, would they back a club with Liverpool in the name?

Disclaimer: Please don't all throw darts at me at once this is just a topic on a discussion forum which I'm keen to explore 🫣

Why stop at Liverpool St Helens?

Why not Manchester Wigan?

Honestly The Daddy, you should try visiting these places and talking to people in Liverpool and St Helens.

You would soon realise what a daft idea this is.

They could invest more time and effort into Liverpool expansion without a name change, they are lucky that they have a club name which is synonymous with the sport.

St Helens should be targeting areas and suburbs on the outskirts of Liverpool by way of school visits and coaching clinics etc.

They already do

Yes,yes,yes,yes.

yes.

Why you so against it, gives the club a bigger platform. The most successful SL club deserves more exposure, more sponsors etc

They need to keep doing it and build upon it.

Yeah build on it by adopting Liverpool as a city and adding it to the club name

On a serious note why do these mergers or name changes keep popping up on here? Theirs no appetite from fans for either especially as most established clubs are steeped in history of RL.

Because it means nothing to the people of Liverpool and St Helens.

all this trumped up geographical social engineering is pure fantasy.

Because they are 2 separate cities/towns with their own proud identity and history.

No appetite from existing fans. Problem with the sport now is that it's in its own echo chamber. You can be steeped in RL history but that doesn't always translate to commercial success and getting more younger people into the sport.

The reason why mergers and name changes keep popping up is because the sport in the UK is shrinking and should be open to rebranding in whatever form it takes to appeal to more people and stay in the public consciousness.

So merging say fev c@s and wakey you’re saying that club would get 20k fans probably more if you’re looking to bring new fans in? That’s fantasy be lucky to get 2k no one in this area wants a merged team.

Did you do a survey of people from both areas? Yeah, it can be fantasy but the sport needs to adapt, people don't want to change and still expect Sky to fork out millions and broadcasters and newspapers to give wall to wall coverage when the geographical footprint continues to shrink. Newcastle is gone, Skolars is gone, West Wales is gone. A huge mentality shift needs to happen across the sport.

Have you been to Liverpool or St Helens yourself?

I've never been an advocate of Fev, Wakey and Cas merging it adds no value to the sport.
