Not only Fiji, but the whole Pacific.

NRL 2024, Jersey Flegg, Kaiviti Silktails matches to be broadcast free to air into Pacific region, PacificAus TV | NRL.com

In a huge boost for rugby league in the Pacific region, all of the Kaiviti Silktails' 26 matches in the Jersey Flegg competition will be distributed by PacificAus TV in 2024  to over nine Free-to-Air broadcast channels across the Pacific, whilst FBC will be the exclusive free-to-air-broadcast-partner in Fiji.

Starting with this Saturday's clash against Wests Tigers at Lidcombe Oval, all of the Silktails' home and away matches will be shown on Free-to-Air channels across the Pacific, bringing more rugby league content to the region.

Silktails chairman Petero Civoniceva added: “This broadcast deal is not just a win for the Silktails as a club but a massive win for our code in Fiji.

“This broadcast deal will allow these young players to showcase their talents playing for the Silktails on television across the Pacific.

“On behalf of everyone at the Kaiviti Silktails a big Vinaka Vakalevu to all of the key stakeholders that have put this landmark deal together.”

I was confused by this post, what I was missing was:

The Silktails have moved from the Ron Massey Cup to the Jersey Flegg Cup this year.

I had hoped they were in both comps, but that would be very expensive.

Ron Massey Cup == NSW 2nd division (so 2 below NRL)

Jersey Flegg Cup == NSW Under 21s

I wonder if this is related to the supposed poor relationship between the Silktails and the Fijian RL.

It’s the better move for me, more chance of producing NRL standard players from a younger age than having a team of mid 20 year olds competing in a 3rd tier competition.

It’s probably the same route the hunters should be going down as well.

Not sure if they’re still in the roosters system or have gone back to the silktails but 3 silktails players turned out for their jersey flegg team last season.

I think we can expect to see a lot more stuff like this. A couple of kids signed from last year`s tour and a couple more this year. What a great opportunity to come over not only for the League opportunities but for the educational opportunities as well.  Great to see the girls` team do so well, winning all three of their matches.

To win the war with Rugby in the Pacific, a good part of it will be to have RL played in schools throughout the Pacific Isles.

Just imagine if the whole Pacific region and places like adelaide and USA & Canada were serviced by all the NRL teams like Souhs are doing. The game would explode. 

As Rocket says SL teams could do something very similar in the embryonic leagues of Europe and Africa with a similar outcome. All SL teams need to see how Salford, of all clubs, have funded a development officer for Ghana.

I don’t understand why Salford of all clubs would have any attention on funding a development officer there. It’s not like it’s Ghana result in any financial or playing strength.

Widnes were involved with Ghana for a while sending volunteers to help out so much so one of their teams took on the vikings image.

I like  that this tournament is being played in Aisa, specifically the Philippines, rather than in Western Sydney somewhere.

There’s no reason why that couldn’t happen in the next ten years for a competitive albeit very raw. A predominantly domestic Asian Championships held every four years in SE Asia.

Speaking of Indonesia, I wonder what the state of the game is in Western Papua, the Indonesian half of New Guinea, given its` shared ethnicity and proximity with Papua. A census in 2022 had nearly six million people living in that region.

Would be interesting to know if they have a shared love of Rugby League as their neighbours and maybe somewhere we can develop into as the game grows in PNG.

New Cal aren’t ranked in RU. The place seems to be a bit of a mess since it’s heyday as a wonderful holiday hotspot for east coast Aussies in days gone by.

Not sure if they have much love for either Rugby, but if there was enough grassroots activity, it looks prime for an easy takeover and potential for France.

Probably the biggest hindrance is the (assumed) harder migration opportunities for them to Aus/NZ, than the other PIs.

I could see Indonesia being very problematic when it comes to developing the sport in West Papua. Developing the national sport of PNG into West Papua and the obvious shared Melanesian heritage with PNG would be at odds with everything they've done and would arguably accelerate unification demands. Don't want to say much more without going overtly political.
