My guess is it’s a case of Saints offering him reduced terms and Catalan being prepared to get near his current deal.

Fly-By-TheWire
What’s happening at Saints? Surely it would be cheaper to poach top young British talent if there’s a current lack of decent backs in the Saints academy? This smacks of Warrington or Hull in the past. I guess it won’t matter too much under Wellens as he won’t really see the ball.

A quota replacement for Hurrell I presume, albeit a winger rather than a centre so will no doubt take Makinson’s place Feldt will be 33 years old come the next Super League, and past his best, but the way Saints have played this season he will probably be their star player next season

I am not sure this 32yr old is the answer… It makes it clear that Makinson chose to leave. I have no doubt that lifestyle and money was probably a factor, although you can't imagine Feldt being any cheaper. Otherwise it makes zero sense swapping a 32 year old homegrown player for a 32 year import.

DoubleD
I know I've referenced this before, but this again highlights the real dearth of quality wingers coming through the SL ranks

Jai Field averaged fewer than 4 games per season in his four years in the NRL. Bevan French couldn't get in the Parramatta squad and played for Wentworthville Magpies the year before he came to Wigan. Edwin Ipape didn't get beyond a train-and-trial contract with Manly. Tom Amone played 17 NRL games in three years before being released. Neither success and failure in the NRL are necessarily mirrored by players coming over to SL. graveyard johnny
hes been a great winger in NRL but - yes signing a 33 year old smacks of desperation - Sailor will be saints star player next year and Feld may gleam a few tries from his attack 1 see you later undertaker - in a while necrophile

Agbrigg
Yes he will be available if he is fit to play. However before this latest injury I watched him closely in the last two games he played for Hull and he looked out of condition and had very little game involvement. Big gamble by us given his injury record.

Is it true what Saints fans are complaining about that Makinson left because he was only offered a 1 year deal yet they offer Feldt a 2 year deal even though he is the same age? Seems odd and daresay desperate, as you say, and because they let Makinson go without a replacement. Edited August 27 by Damien

We have been playing without any halves for the past three weeks (and 1 for the past three months), Lino is injured without a definite return date, Lawford is out for the season and Gale isn't getting any younger and is currently injured. We've been playing with a full back and a ultility (or hooker) at 6 and 7. We've had nothing but disruption.

Yeah there is, it's very attractive if you finish your career there after so many years (its not many but I recall how many).

I have nothing whatsoever against JT. Good short kicking game no long kicking game. But the truth is albeit due to injuries he has done nothing during the past 3-4 seasons. A previous bad back injury at such a young age never ends well. This is a big gamble and I only up the contract contains a lot of i and t’s in it.
