Rightly or wrongly, distinct timeslots are assumed essential to maximizing NRL TV revenue. Overall season ratings exceed those of AFL partly because NRL have no simultaneous or overlapping games. Adding South Island to Warriors ensures a regular NZ-based fixture for the Friday 6pm AEST slot.

Also worth considering the extent to which NRL on TV is already at saturation point. Going from 8 to 10 games a week might not increase aggregate viewership by much among the committed fanbase. NZ 2 seems more likely than Brisbane 3 to attract completely new followers or persuade casual followers to watch an extra game.

not for me as it’s too soon after the addition of the dolphins and not at the expense of NZ2 although I’d take them over PNG every day of the week.
