Super league NRL team

The discussion on the NRL having an input into to SL has me thinking about an idea I’ve had for a while. What if we reversed that and the RFL took over an NRL expansion side. Perth for example it could be run as a development tool for England players.

The RFL can’t afford to suitably fund expansion in London or France, how would it afford it in Perth or any other NRL expansion destination?

They would receive the NRL tv money like all NRL sides. That would go along way in SL. Could probably afford all England players not already in the NRL add to that a core of NRL players for the first few years.

Why would SL teams bother running academies if the best young players disappeared off to play in the NRL? It would quickly turn the current trickle into a flood.

Unless England players were put on central contracts, how would you expect SL clubs to just send their best English players to Perth to aid their development?

It's an interesting idea that England do the same as PNG and NZ.....just join as a nation 

Maybe the NRL's main goal is just that.....NRL become international RL

Would a share of the NRL money allow them to make Central Contracts ?

NZ and PNG don’t have a professional league.

This is going to happen anyway with NRL central funding at $13m+ and only going one way. The best players are going to end up there anyway at least we would have a bit of control of it.

You just pick up off contract players no SL club could compete for wages. It’s just it could be run to the benefit to the England team. I’m not saying you would have the full England team in as some wouldn’t go and others would sign for established NRL clubs. It could be run to develop British players.

I think it could give the amateur game in England a real boost as young kids see the opportunity. If pro clubs can’t see the benefits it wouldn’t surprise me the good clubs would though I’m sure.

I don’t know but there are a lot of expats in that area.

Just to add I’m not saying this would be purely run as an England team it would have to be run as a proper NRL team with some experienced NRL players in there especially at the start. Just with an eye on doing it to the benefit of the England team. You could even scout a few South African players as they also have a large expat community in the area.

What’s the benefit though they aren’t suddenly get £billions in a tv deal just because the NRL is involved.

So a SL player with a year left on his contract has to make a decision either to sign a contract extension with his current club or risk being without a club to have a chance of playing for Perth?

No it would be run like any other team just ran by the RFL. Most British players in the NRL were signed off contract.

There are a lot of people in London, but only 1 in 5,000 of them go to each Broncos game. Still, 150,000 Brits living in Perth apparently, so on a similar ratio that's at least 30 tickets sold ...

I thought Perth had already proved it can sell tickets for RL.

It requires a lot more than just $13m+ in central funding to financially support a NRL club. 

This is a non starter Bob. If the RFL want to “develop” home grown players, they would be better off investing time, energy and finances into improving those opportunities at home, instead of in Perth or another NRL destination.
