By Leeds yeah? Was in the academy from being aged 16/17?

Never played in Salford junior RL? just plucked from the streets in Manchester saying he looks a big lad let's take him to our academy? I suppose Sinfield falls into the same Catagory.

He joined Leeds's academy, he didn't join their first team. He is home grown.

"He's one of our own, he's one of our own, albeit from Manchester not Leeds, Kallum Watkins is one of our own"

Has quite a ring to it don't you think?

You know someone doesn't have to join an academy at 2 yrs old to be counted as home grown right?

Did either of them play for Lancashire in the Rose's games? Or in their junior careers?

Are you claiming Adrian Morley as well?

Watkins played in the Leeds academy. He made his professional debut for Leeds. As far as the Salary Cap rules and everyone else is concerned he is a Leeds academy product and therefore home grown.

FWIW I think it was a bit of a mistake by Leeds to not get Watkins when he came back to the UK.

Wigan seem to have a "first dibs" approach to NRL returning players but Leeds don't seem interested. I'm not entirely sure why, I wonder if the previous contract regime seemed to take leaving personally with some players?

So is Lachlan Lam, not on the register of overseas players because he spent a couple of years in mini rugby when his dad was at Wigan, did or do you agree with that?

I think Leeds look for more "value for money" in their signings, so usually NRL players can find better money elsewhere, I think the way Watkins came back (compassionate reasons/signing for Toronto) may have had something to do with it too.

You misunderstand me, home grown is a salary cap point because academy trained players allow for a discount on their overall cap value.

It's nothing to do with what amateur team they played for, otherwise nobody would ever be home grown ever.

I get that, but likewise I don't think Salford could, given their financial situation, be outspending Leeds on him?

I hate the Wigan approach and wish we didn't do it.

I don't think it should be automatic, but have Leeds been too far the other way? The only returner has been Hardaker ironically.

No I didn't misunderstand you Tommy I well know what SC dispensation points are all about, I have argued it many times on these pages when a clubs request to run an academy but get turned down,  I was just highlighting Lam as how daft laws in RL can be.
