I didn't see the incident. I was distracted by the final of the Olympic underwater horseback karaoke break-dancing marathon. Given Bentley's track record, it's just possible that he may have had some part in the incident. Can any impartial observer on here (go one, there must be ONE) comment?

He was not entirely blameless for earlier incidents, Smith was already wound up- apparently to breaking point- and just snapped. As I posted earlier I was amazed at Bentley's restraint in not reacting at all. I think he knew he didn't need to as Smith was sure to be sent off.

I'm 100% impartial 😇

Bentley was on the floor, Smith went in with an elbow, I think trying to make it look like he was completing the tackle. Reality was Bentley had gotten under his skin for the past 10 minutes and for Smith the red mist descended.

Perhaps Bentley got his retaliation in first.  Anyway, whatever sanction Smith gets will be controversial.

Also not mentioned   it was a gang tip tackle, Bentley landed on his back and on his neck, which was rough in itself, then came the forearm to the face

He did go after Smith a few times earlier but Smith took the bait. At least twice before this incident there was a coming together where Smith was trying to leave something on Bentley. In fact Smith could’ve been sin binned for the one before but the ref was lenient on him and Martin  as I said in the match thread he just lost his head a bit.

Whatever, the neutral and independent MRP will consider the evidence and issue an appropriate penalty.  Hoping that Smith has learn a lesson.

And Smith was the one lifting the legs. If it hadn’t been for his team mates holding Bentley up, it would have been a full on spear tackle, with Smith the culprit.

I can't see anything controversial about the sending off and probable 3 or 4 match ban.

👁️ 😄

Whatever the verdict and sanction, I'll respect it unconditionally.

Regarding Harry Smith, I'm surprised nobody seems to have raised the question of Matty Peet's game management. Since it was obvious that Smith was both exhausted and angry towards the end of the game, with the game lost and big games coming up, could Peet not have replaced him, maybe by bringing Hampshire back on? Or had all the substitutions been used by then?

Think they’d used all their subs by the last 10-15 mins. At least the commentators were suggesting so

We will see if the punishment matches those dished out in the Championship and League 1.

See? Told you so. And that's before he's been found  guilty and burnt at the stake.

I think part of the issue was we were trying to chase the game. You wouldn't take your playmaker off when trying to win a game and then by the time the game was out of sight we'd used almost all of our subs. We also needed to rotate the players down the middle too given how much work they'd done over the last 10 days.

It's been noticeable from Smith over the last few weeks that he's looked mentally or physically exhausted (or perhaps both) at times. He's made some poor errors and been noticeably frustrated with himself. He's been the heart of the team for most of the year, incredibly consistent and when you suddenly can't do the things that have been second nature all year it can get to you. He probably took on more responsibility than he should when Farrimond came into the team. Everything was going through Smith and that was either him trying too hard to take the pressure off or coaching instruction to rely more on Smith but it's not really worked.

Sitting out a few games might do him some good in the long term, but it's going to cost Wigan in the short term.

They won’t as full time players can be fined more and banned less.

I think you'll find he's already been found guilty. There's obviously the (remote, IMO having seen the footage) possibility of the guilty verdict being subsequently overturned but as things stand he is officially guilty. Who has suggested burning at the stake? Only seen suggestions of a long ban which (again, only my opinion) is rather more lenient. 😉

I've mentioned this on previous occasions on here. Our discipline is problem.   It's up to the coach to fix this overall, and it's up to the captain to fix it on the field, during the match. This does not seem to be happening. I've just had to check who our captain is given the apparent lack of in-game leadership.
