General NRLW Match Thread

Recommended Posts

I think, given the number of WNRL viewers and poster this forum has, we could just have a catch-all thread for the remainder of the season. Maybe a special one for the GF.

Anyhoo, having an evening match each round is great for us in the UK time zone and the action I've seen has been good.

I notice that some Olympic RU Sevens players are already signed up to WNRL clubs. It is remarkably soon after their Paris exploits, so maybe more will come across in the longer term.

Sharni Smale has signed for the Sharks! Yes Sharni Smale! Who? Come on, don't be obtuse. The 36 year-old world-famous RU Sevens "star".

Named on the interchange for Sunday v Knights. Shark Park will be heaving. Should have moved the game to Allianz.

Wests v Eels has been very physical so far. After an early try each, they've been locked at 6 all for most of the match.

Wests 10:12 Eels at FT. Tough game.

Positional tactics obsessive alert!

The second Titans try v Roosters is worth studying. Short-side play where the dummy-half steps out, engages the marker, then throws a pass back across the ruck. Normally the pass would be behind the tackled player for obvious reasons. This one went between the tackled player and the marker. Illustrates why markers shouldn't drift back and concede the space.

Lauren Brown was the dummy-half. She's currently playing 7, but has previously played a lot of 9.

It'll be interesting to see how many current Kiwi NRLW players switch to the Warriors when they return next season.

Union women's comp the Farah Palmer Cup is currently running. Watched some highlights and it all looks a bit lacklustre. On the back of the Warriors off-field rise, great chance for the NRLW team to blow the FP Cup out the water next year in terms of media and fan engagement.

From a domestic development perspective, just hope their recruitment sends the message that playing League is the best route to an NRLW contract.

Absurdly draconian 2-match ban for Roosters winger Jayme Fressard. She must be a Far Right thug.

P.A. system at Dragons/Sharks was playing what sounded like Black Sabbath's Iron Man with female vocals. Cardigans did a version. Wasn't them.

Ella Koster is like Paige Travis without the dinosaur plait.

Re second Georgia Ravics try for Sharks v Titans.

Deep backline with winger arcing a long way round the defence. Don't think I ever see this set-up in WSL. Our wingers always seem to be flatter and wider.

By the same token, on shift plays, you rarely see an English winger take the initiative and run an inside line under her centre. They just keep drifting further and further, eventually running out of space.

That’s because the standard isn’t very good in WSL

I think wing is probably the least impressive position for NRLW players in my opinion.

Apart from the amazing Julia Robinson and 2-3 others there are so really poor players in that position.

I would love to see Leah Burke, Anna Davies and even Amelia Brown get a start in the NRLW.

Anyone else have problems with the WatchNRL app for this Roosters v Raiders game?

I'm using the Fire TV browser, which works but is less convenient.

The problem for Brown is that she needs to be playing alongside better players every week, and she's not going to get that at Huddersfield for a long time.

My comments were related more to configurations and coaching than innate individual talent.

Re the aforementioned Georgia Ravics try, every reason to think each of these three English players would finish the move off in similar fashion. Argument remains I wouldn't expect to see a winger in WSL positioned so deep.

Judged against which criteria?

Is it just me, or has the 2024 NRL/WNRL season has a lot more matches in filthy weather than usual?

The NRLW's comp is developing depth in numbers & skill levels. I watch all the highlights & really enjoy the matches. How is the progress in the UK going in comparison?

Emotional scenes as Wests Tigers win again at the end of an otherwise underwhelming season, in a result that could jeopardise Cronulla's finals ambitions.

Sharks go from being top and clear with six from six to losing their last three. They should still make the semis, but it’s not certain.

I fancied the Roosters to take down the Knights.

Absolutely didn't expect Broncos 0 Sharks 14 in Brisbane.

Looking for omens -

When Sharks NRL won their first premiership in 2016, they led the comp for much of the year, had a major wobble towards the end of the regular season, then hit form again in the finals.

Quite similar to Sharks NRLW in 2024. Won the first 6, lost the next 3, followed by a landmark semi-final performance.
