The battle for third place

Recommended Posts

Could be important come the play offs. We need to get one more point than Hunslet from the final three games to lock in third.

Both teams play Keighley and North Wales while we play newcastle and hunslet play midlands.

On the final weekend of the regular season Hunslets game at Midlands is on Saturday meaning Hornets may be in control of their fate on Sunday when they are at home to Keighley.

If Oldham beat Keighley this weekend keighly will have nothing to play for but pride in their games v Hunslet and us.

So it could be  a hornets win needed on the final day to finish third. And if play off results went with final league positions That would mean we play Keighley twice more in the play offs ( or three times in 5 weeks).

Off course if Hunslet win their three remaining league games none of this applies. An exciting run in all the same.

Yes, I agree an exciting run in with all teams capable of beating each other ! Hornets are going well but a massive few weeks ahead.

If we get third and win our home game we will go to Keighley . Win that and we are in the final.

Keighley have got a dilemma.  Play full out against the yeds, risking injury and fatigue. Even if they win, the yeds are still likely to win the last two home games gaining promotion.  Or do they play it safe, resting up ready for the play offs. I wager they'll go flat out. Giving you a much better chance of beating them.

And will host the final in that scenario

After the tough games to reach that scenario, we would be battle hardened and hopefully without the loss of injured players.   Perhaps facing a fresher Swinton, which should be a cracking game and a great crowd.

“The League One Grand Final will be played on Sunday 6 October at the home ground of the team ranked highest during the regular season.”     (https://halifaxpanthers.co.uk/panthers-news/2024-betfred-championship-and-league-one-fixtures-revealed/)

That refers to the league 1 grand final…not the championship- league 1 play off game. Despite repeated requests about the venue for that game noone has yet been able to help. Only that they assume/believe/expect it to be at the home of the championship participant

It looks likely that the playoff winners will play Barrow or Swinton  who ironically play each other at Barrow this Sunday. It looks like the losers of that game will finish 3rd bottom looking at remaking fixtures but you never know.

Another battle in the form of Storm Lilian is forecast tomorrow for northern England and parts of Scotland.

Keep safe and hope any damage is minimised.

“The storm will bring an area of strong winds across northern England with gusts widely 50 to 60mph.

There's even a chance of some intense winds gusting up to 80mph and a Met Office yellow warning for wind has been issued for 05:00 BST to 11:00 BST on Friday.

It specifically mentions possible problems for drivers on the M6, A66 and A1(M).”

If  the BBC forecast is accurate it will be around 90% wet from 1pm to 4pm + with a 15mph ‘moderate breeze’.
Our faithful will encourage the Hornets win today, finish the league with a win over Keighley (sunny 20+ degrees) into the play-offs…..Oldham supporters welcome, better than shopping.

Excellent win today and now just Keighley at home 1/9 to finish an excellent league campaign.  Hunslet needs a win at Midlands next Saturday afternoon, or we finish 3rd 👏.  Yorks Tim’s underlined news item explains the play-offs.

Good steady performance today. Managed the game well and took the chances as they came.

Defence won us that game today. They only really broke us down once with ball in hand.. Their second try was courtesy of a speculative kick. First half was ok although we blew a great attacking move on the last pass. Second half was scrappy with both teams coughing up what could have been a slippery ball regularly. We had chances but took the wrong option too many times. I though the ref was a bit fussy with both teams, what was the sin binning for ?
