Surprising to see a SL player in a NZ squad. Has that happened recently for NZ or Australia?

Not too surprising, Peta Hiku has been New Zealand’s starting centre for a long time. Not going to lose his position just cause me moved to SL, and also he has had a great year for Hull KR.

Joey Manu leaving to Union also frees up a spot at centre.

Also massive news that Casey McLean is in the kiwis squad. One of the best U18s players in the world, going to become one of the best outside backs in the world in the future, so big loss for the blues and Australia and massive gain for the kiwis.

Jahrome Hughes out for the Kiwis.

Sean Johnson out of retirement to replace him.

Coates switching allegiance is so saddening. Having a candidate for the best wingman in the world in a Kumuls jumper would have been great to see.

I'm looking forward to seeing Simbiken in a yellow and red jumper. I thought he was very damaging and the best forward on the field in the first half of the State Championship Game last weekend.

Shame no Finley Glare, young halfback who has been starring for the Hunters. Will be playing this weekend in the PM’s XIII game though. Also no Olam, Johnston, Laybutt all missing out through injury.

Young hunters players Sanny Wabo and Alex Max are also incredibly exciting so would definitely keep eyes on them. Also Judah Rimbu of course who is the QLD cup player of the year.

Yeah, I was hoping/expecting to see Glare. I've been keeping an eye on him, and he's definitely a talent.

I suppose with Johnston and Coates out for injury and jumping ship it'll give Robert Derby a chance on the wing. I'm not sure who the other wingman would be though. There are a few names I'm not really familiar with in there.

17 should be

1-Sanny Wabo
2-Nene MacDonald
3-Alex Max
4-Rodrick Tai
5-Robert Derby
6-Kyle Laybutt
7-Lachlan Lam
8-Sylvester Namo
9-Edwin Ipape
10-Jack De Belin
11-Rhyse Martin
12-Dan Russell
13-Liam Horne

14-Judah Rimbu
15-Valentine Richard
16-Khaiya Waiembi
17-Jacob Alick

Sanny Wabo got the fullback spot for hunters after Morea’s injury. He has played sensational though and has kept the spot even after Morea has been back from injury. Alex Max has also been sensational this year 13 tries in 17 games, same type of player as Olam and Tai. Could be as good as them if not better.

Richard and Waiembi are good young front rowers.

Reasonably strong-looking 17.

I'm not familiar with young Max. Looking forward to seeing how he goes.

I'd have Simbiken in the 17, probably ahead of Waiembi.

Cheers for that predicted line-up. It's helpful.

I read today that they'll be promotion and relegation between the pools, bottom v top to be played as a 'final'. I suggested a Nations League style format which this is, allbeit on a small scale.

What's not clear is where Samoa fit into this.

I presume Samoa will replace Australia in 2025

P&R is great, one shame is that it means we may miss out again on Samoa v Tonga next year!

In good news I see the NZ v Aus test has sold out!

Teams are out for week 1.

Not many surprises, Tom Trbojevic gets the centre spot ahead of specialist Bradman Best.

This is Trbojevic's first test since 2018.

The most likely scenario is that Tonga finish bottom of the cup and either PNG or Fiji will win the bowl. The question is to whether Tonga could beat either of those teams in the promotion play off. I'd say probably yes.

On the strength of the Kiwis squad, I would have them down to finish bottom.

Hiku will likely miss out now too

I certainly don’t have Tonga down as the weakest team.

I hadn’t given it much thought but haven’t Australia lost their last test match against each of NZ and Tonga?
