Does anyone have access to the BARB viewing figures for Sky/BBC these days?

The handy weekly top 10s disappeared a while back and not sure we now have any frame of reference outside of press releases for what our TV audience is like these days.

The last time I looked at the BARB website, it looked like any information that could be relevant to RL was subscription level only.

In this area I'd suggest no news is bad news, surely any competent press office would be screaming about increases in viewing figures?

Based on Cas Tigers IMG related press release, they believe they have a 3 yr average above 150k, I can infer nothing further. Not seen anybody else mention it.

I tend to agree, but them I can't really remember anything being released about anything at all this year. Not sure if this is to do with us in the process of hiring a Director of Marketing and Comms. Pretty much every year we will have had press releases about viewing figures or crowds or something. I haven't seen owt this year, but I could have missed it.

Grand Final viewing figures.

The number seems on the low side to me. Hopefully the SS+ numbers boost it a bit.

The pub I was in, in Bradford, was showing the Bradford City game beforehand. I wondered how come they were on TV on Saturday afternoon and was told it's due to the new Sky deal whereby you can pretty much watch any games your team play. Apologies for being behind the times but won't things like this affect overall viewing?  figures?

That does sound like they were using a dodgy box TBH. The 3pm blackout is still meant to apply - although maybe it also takes an international break.

There are hundreds more EFL football games available under their new TV deal, regardless.

No it was above board, all EFL matches yesterday were on live on SS+, part of the new deal. With no top tier games played it was a good way for Sky to work towards their commitment to show every EFL team 20 times this season,  and get some extra viewers for lower leagues.

Nope it's all legit now

SKY sports plus sometimes shows league 2 3pm Saturday kick offs now (not always)

@HawkManis right, above. It's during international breaks. The BBC had an FA Cup tie streaming as well.

But, anyway, viewing figures for the Grand Final.

Good, bad, indifferent?

If there are some SS+ numbers to add, could end up a bit better than par. 269k seems a little below par.

Excuse my ignorance but why is there two different averages given?

Is the latter number peak?

There isn't - the second is peak audience.

"Combined across the two channels, the game attracted a peak viewing figure of 479,000. There was also an average throughout the broadcast of 374,000: a big boost compared to last year’s event.

The 2023 final had an average audience of 267,200, Love Rugby League has been told – meaning a huge rise year-on-year for the competition."

If the average is a programme average (rather than match average)- we basically have 450k people who watched the entire match.

Good news is that we have a solid Base of people who like RL and buy subscriptions for it.

Less good is struggle to attract floating viewer. Doesn't appear that many people dipped in which would generate a bigger difference between peak and average

A 40% increase on last year is an excellent result.

Two English teams compared to Wigan vs Catalan must have some impact.

Does anyone know what the figures were for years before 2023?

If they're not in the story, and I tend not to click on Love RL because of their clickbaity stuff, then it's a badly written piece as that information would give important context, as would what would other live sport on at the same time got.

I wouldn't have thought Catalan would be responsible for the fall last year but, on digging, it looks as if 2020 and 2022 (w/o Catalan) were quite a bit better than 2021 and 2023 (w Catalan). Maybe there is a decent sized chunk of viewers from the towns/cities involved after all. I did read somewhere that last year's GF pulled in 100k on L'Equipe - so that may be some compensation for the lower number on SS.

In the UK and on SS, I think we've been as high as 424k (2022) in the past.

This is what I found with a quick Google search:

2020: average 400,000 (closed doors)

2021: average 300,000

2022: peak 471,000, average 424,000

2023: peak 377,000, average 267,000

2024: peak 479,000; average 374,000
