It's not a luxury you can afford when there isn't a monster TV deal making up a good % of turnover. Selling a few replica shirts can go a long way in a smaller sport like UK RL and UK clubs should absolutely be maximising their revenue streams any way they can.

I agree, it's different in the UK. But there's "selling a few replica shirts" and then there's "totally changing your entire kit design every season", and I'm not sure they have to be the same thing.

The Souths extreme isn't tenable here, sure, but a less "chuck it at a wall and see what sticks" approach might help clubs defend or build some more recognisable brands in the UK.

...They have an additonal alternate shirt (for Canberra games) that people can buy if they want a radical change, and there's loads of other training shirts - it's not like having one less distinctive "away" shirt really limits customer choice, or the club's ability to sell multiple items to one fan.

Is this a recent development? I can recall at least twice within the last 4 or 5 years watching Canberra v Souths with the Rabbitohs wearing their usual cardinal and myrtle - It was a terrible kit clash and is the main reason I can't understand them being allowed such similar home and away shirts.

I also wonder how colour blind people manage when they play against teams in red (or reddish) kits - Dolphins, Broncos.

Too many Super League clubs, mine as much as any other, dilute their brand equity in the chase for the short term fix of selling a few replica shirts.

This I agree with - I just think South Sydney take the concept too far. It shouldn't take priority over distinguishing between teams on the field.

that was 150-200 years after the vikings had settled in Dublin though so would that really constitute "Viking" as they were now only of "Scandinavian origin" rather than being those from Scandinavia? i could happily go either way on that..

There is an interesting train of thought going down that line of thought that the Norman Conquest was infact just an extension of the Viking invasions and not a wholesale change the governance of the kingdom as William descended from Rolo who came over with the great heathen army...

I'm only here for the Viking chit-chat 😀 .... Battle of Brunanburh was 937, so your timeline pushes Viking settlement in Ireland back well before 800, which looks a bit early IMHO. No evidence of Rollo's association with the Great Heathen Army (which hit England in 865) - Rollo died in 933.

Anyway, that Souths "Away" shirt is ridiculous 😆

I do like that home jersey tbf, and Knauf are an impressive multi-national sponsor for a League One side.

Its all the board is good for in the off season, bit of viking chat and some restructures 😄

fair enough settlement may be pushing it a bit as Dublin was "settled" in the 840s but they had been raiding, landing and (IIRC) farming in the North at places like Rathlin since the late 8th Century. I always had in my head that the Great Heathen Army was later and Rollo a bit earlier but, as mentioned, A-Levels were a long time ago now, almost as far back as first hand history (it feels)!!!

Decent work from the Broncos there.

My concern for the Broncos kits is the inconsistency of the logo. I get they've wanted to go retro, but I kind of feel it should have been a case of change both or neither. If you're going to change one, just make minor alterations do you can still see a connection (like Man Utd having just the devil on their way kit).

I'm sure someone will explain to me why I'm wrong, but it just feels too much like a shirt literally from the past rather than a tribute to the past.

Other than that, smashing kit.

Hopefully we go back to our old logo, never liked the new one.

It is strange as the away shirt does have the new badge on it as well, it's just at the bottom of the shirt instead.

Widnes have down the same for last year and this. Traditional Town crest on home kit and vikings logo on away. Still not sure  how I feel about that

Your not wrong. Two conflicting branding elements in this instance is just silly and needless. But further highlights the level the Broncos operate at.

Didn't even notice that, yes that's a bit weird.

Leeds Utd have done it this season, the away Kit has a retro logo on it.

However, Leeds Utd operate at vastly different level to the London Broncos, they should have released it as a heritage kit rather than an away kit.

The current logo is awful, but that's a separate point.

Its quite a trendy thing being done in the Premier League at the moment. A few away kits have different badges to the home.

Fab job by the broncos.. keep that home kit for ever more and cycle the old retro kits for away kits would be a brilliant way to do it!

Every Adidas team has it I believe, or at least had it as an option.

I suspect clubs will do it more given the success in sales clubs like LUFC have had with their retro inspired kits. We've had it a bit at the Rhinos with Oxen going for the two blue kits of the 24 and 25 being remakes of 04 and 05 (iirc!)

Sheffield Wednesday announced quite some time ago at the old 1970s style badge (which they should never have changed) will be being used on the 3rd kit next year. Was met with a massive clamour just to bring it back 100% (which has always been the case) but Mr Chansiri in his infinite wisdom doesn't like the fans so stuff 'em

Indeed and the irony being the retro logo actually looks like a modern rebrand

I think there are levels to this and clubs with a strong brand identity and fan base can push this a lot more. As always Football clubs are in a different league to RL clubs, especially one that has alienated fans, plays in front of few and has messed about with its identity and home ground more times than I can remember.
