Rochdale Hornets captain Duane Straugheir has signed a new 12-month deal, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2025 season.

The new contract will see the experienced second-rower embark on his third campaign with the Hornets. Since his debut in 2023, Straugheir has made 28 appearances, scoring 10 times.

This season the 34-year-old has made 19 appearances, 17 of which have come in a very impressive Betfred League 1 campaign which culminated in a third-placed finish for Gary Thornton’s side.

News of Straugheir’s deal comes ahead of the club's home play-off tie with Hunslet, set for Sunday 15 September (3pm kick-off).

On the 12-month extension, he said: “I’m thrilled to have signed a new deal with the Hornets and to continue my journey with this great team.

“It’s an exciting time for the club, and I’m really looking forward to the year ahead. We’ve got a lot to build on, and I can’t wait to contribute to what I believe will be another successful season.

“The support from the fans and everyone involved with the club has been amazing, and I’m eager to repay that faith by giving everything I have for another year.

“But first, let’s make this year one to remember!”

Rochdale Hornets chairman Andy Mazey said: "As our supporters will be able to see, we have been working hard this year, not only to ensure that 2024 is a success, but to ensure we build on this in 2025.

“Retaining our skipper and one of our main leaders in Straugh is a big statement for us, as he has been immense this year.

“Good people do good things, and this is another important piece of business we've got done.”
