Is the ref allowed to ask the physio whether they want the green card or to take the player off?

Going for an HIA allows them to keep an interchange, doesn't it?

Yea, if he passes and returns to the field within 15minutes(I think) then it is a free interchange.

What the hell was that?

Why was the referee and trainer talking about if he should get a green card or HIA?

Surely he needs a HIA or he doesn't - but the trainer had to think about what would be better.

Disgraceful from both IMO.

Unintended consequences of a scheme that was to punish cheating.

Not a disgrace from the ref for me.  He was simply saying that the process is that if he wasn't going for a HIA then he would have to give a green card.

It is the physio's responsibility to look after their players.  The disgrace is that it looked like they were going to let him play on when it was a clear case for a HIA.

You would hope the trainers would have more professional responsibility.

The referee shouldn't have even spoken to the trainer other than asking, "is he going for a HIA" and then waiting for the answer before mentioning the green card.

I just mentioned it in my last post - The ref shouldn't have give him some kind of choice - Asked if he was going for HIA and waited for the answer. If the trainer said no - then give the green card.

The trainer has decided no HIA is needed, clearly. The rules allow for them to take a free sub. So in terms of professional responsibility he has done his medical assessment fine, he's played the rugby rules.

Your suggestion of how the ref dealt with that is sensible. The ref pretty much spelled that out to them. Agree it's poor.

It's a good example of needing to introduce rules that do what they are intended to do.

He got a bump on the head. He was down with his eyes swimming.

He wasn't wobbly or anything.

The optics of the ref giving the trainer the choice is what doesn't look great IMO. The ref should leave that up to the trainer and take any action after the trainer has decided.

Lovely play from Williams, good support from Crowther. Needed that before half time.

I thought the short ball from Williams on the play before the try was fairly obviously forward.

I thought it was poor by our trainer not to get Philbin off straightaway, he had taken a bang to the head and needed examining.

Lees is a complete disgrace isn't he. Otherwise I thought Saints defended well for the most part and it was an intriguing half.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

Wilkin just gone to town on the current sin bin issues on sky. Agreed with everything he said. The current approach does nothing to fix the concussion issues but just creates an appalling look for the game.

The ref is not a medical professional, the physio's should have just got him off for a HIA, not worry about the options.

I joined the game late. Just saw the Fitzgibbon yellow.

That is one of the weakest sin-binnings I've seen. A big guy tackling a dipping ball-carrier and it brushes his head.

Just a penalty.

Lees is a liability, but his silly lateness into the back was a weak yellow as well.

Appealing or appalling?

Wilkin was certainly getting energised and animated.

I am left wandering if the ref thought 'he needs a HIA' and forced the issue.

If they deemed it not serious enough for an HIA, then they shouldn't have taken him off.

The contact was just over his left eye and his eyes were scrunched up and watering. I think he'll be fine.
