As an aside I have seen quite a few ex SL players well past their sell by date still playing in the Championship. I dont know what the various clubs are paying these blokes but I suspect many are their highest earners. Many of those I have seen this season look like they are just going through the motions to top up their pensions. While ever Championship clubs are stupid enough to throw money at these 'has beens', they are always going to have financial issues. Sounds like a particular SL team squad for next season:) Edited September 5 by ATLANTISMAN

How are non Super League attendances? It's going well....so far. So no mention of coming in to make clubs sustainable. There is a mention of long-term growth though which people conveniently ignore.
Dave T
There are no zingers here, and it's predictable to see people trying to score political points to support their preferences. Clubs have gone bust throughout the history of RL and indeed other sports that are more popular. This will go on forever. Some clubs will struggle, some will thrive.

On the other hand York loaded their 2021 squad with ex-SL talent and we missed the play-offs. Adam Cuthbertson was absolute pony! Well if clubs can keep financially sustainable by using large proportions of their team budget on such players, good luck. Its the clubs who go out on a limb chasing an impossible dream that come unstuck.

Hate arguing on the internet but, for me sport is about performance on the field, if you believe better facilities are the magic bullet that will save Rugby League that's your prerogative. A Winning team usually attracts more spectators than a losing team. I'm only a punter who pays his £20 a week to watch my team. Sport should be all about what's on the field, say fans of the sport which along with soccer pioneered spending money on playing squads making it so that the amount of money you had was the determining factor in the quality of the team... Fax and Haven aren't teetering on the edge of going bust because they haven't been good at sport.

I'm not denying there is no alternative, I'm just not pretending that any of us on here have ever watched a Rugby League match that wasn't in part affected by the amount of money that could be spent by both clubs. Amateur RL is for the Corinthian spirit. Professionals are there to do business.
gazza77
Time to go back to a salary cap at a more realistic level in the championship? Wasn't it at £3-400k level when it was abandoned around the time of the middle 8s. Won't be a silver bullet, but might stop some of the unsustainable spending at some clubs. Gav Wilson
2 minutes ago, Normy_Rover said: So what's your alternative? Genuine question. How do teams improve their playing squad without spending money? They prioritise spending in other areas to make the whole club better. Facilities, media, marketing, hospitality, other events, player development and so on. This will expand income streams allowing clubs to spend more, and with a stronger base. @GavWilson

This isn't some IMG new fangled thing either, it's literally why the likes of Leeds, Saints and Wigan have now and have almost always had some of the best facilities in the sport.

I don't know if the incapability of a couple should ruin it for everyone else tbf. Perhaps the old % of turnover idea or something like football's PSR might be possible, but given the sums we are talking about here it really shouldn't need to get to that (and doesn't for the vast majority). My worry here, for the whole sport, is just how small the numbers involved now are. The money being paid to players to play a physically demanding sport is, basically, button money, and yet it's at a level where the money clubs are generating can't sustain it. I'll join the debates around that elsewhere but it's quite startling that clubs are going to the wall because they can't afford Aldi floor worker salaries. 8 Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. RFL and IMG have had the big rethink, it is literally being implemented this year. Whitehaven and Halifax spending money they don't have has no correlation with that. 5 @GavWilson
