Every brewery is now brewing a 3.4% beers it seems

Going round a few Preston pubs on Saturday - Winckley Ale House, Plau, Guild Ale House, The Orchard, Plug & Taps. Might even get into the Black Horse for nostalgia purposes. Spidey Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 I’ve not had alcoholic beer in volume for a while. Over the weekend I did drink BrewDog punk AF, San Miguel 0, Heineken 0, Corona 0 Guinness 0, Peroni 0. Plus a German pils AF called Rathaus. All of which satisfied my taste buds. I did treat myself to a half of Belhaven 80’ which was a decent session beer while in Edinburgh
Jeff Stein Posted October 6, 2024 Posted October 6, 2024 During the Wigan Leigh game, I had a taste test between Budweiser Budvar (original) and Budweiser Budvar Dark. Been a big fan of Budvar for over 30 years, but generally prefer dark beers. The original Budvar is a world classic and very refreshing, but I really like the dark. However i really like the Budvar dark. Unlike some of the darks, which have come out lately, the malt is not overpowering. Conclusion: Both were tastier than the Wigan Leigh game. 1

Near Russel Square in London ther is/was a pub that had Original Budwieser Budvar on draught, both braun and blonde, my wife is a big fan of Budvar and was wondering which to go for. The guy behind the bar said to her "you're from up north, you like mixed, I'll do you a mixed", she whent for it. She now recomends Budvar mixed to everyone. Not seeing much, if any, at 3.4% where I go, Wigan, Preston, Lancaster mainly. The reference to Lancaster makes me go all nostalgic, Padge. Even as I type this at my computer desk, there are, near me on the desk, four still full (never opened) bottles of beer. They include one of Yates & Jackson's 'Nut Brown' and one of Mitchell's 'Centenary Ale - 1880-1980'. For the record, the other two bottles are from Traquair House (brew no. 20, bottle no. 28352, according to the handwriting on the label!) and Hall & Woodhouse (t/a Badger Beers) from Blandford Forum; it's one of their 'Bicentenary Ale - 1777-1977' bottles. When Mrs WWD and I got wed, at Long Preston church, we had a DIY reception at Long Preston village hall, for which I got in draught beer from Yates & Jackson, Mitchell's and Hartley's of Ulverston - a very happy day for various reasons! 1

We had a leaving do or two at The Enterprise on Red Lion Street, also near Holborn. That usually had a reasonable range of beers and wasn't rammed too full of amateur drinkers at the end of the working day. Padge Posted October 9, 2024 Author Posted October 9, 2024 Demolished pub owners back in court after failing to rebuild the 18th Century building. The Punch Bowl Inn, in Hurst Green, was bulldozed in June 2021. https://www.lancashiretelegraph.co.uk/news/24639218.punch-bowl-inn-owners-given-option-ribble-valley-rebuild/ With cases like this I would love to see them sent to jail until the rebuild is completed. Jeff Stein Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 Got the new CAMRA Good Beer Guide. The section on breweries which have closed over the last year is a bit depressing. Seems more than normal with quite a few big names included, although that may be through the Marstons tour of destruction (or tour of destruction of Marstons). Three closed breweries this year, which I have fond memories of, are York (I know they have been in trouble for some time but always enjoyed going in on the away trip weekends when Skolars were playing there), Calvors (principally a proper lager brewery in Suffolk but did do some good cask ales as well) and White Horse (who were still in plenty of pubs in Oxford when I visited last year).

Traditional breweries tend to be in big, expensive to run and maintain old buildings, while microbreweries can be set up in a rented shed on an industrial estate.
