THE BEST EVER GRAND FINAL TRY YOU EVER SAW SCORED

The best ever grand final try I saw was way back on Saturday the 17th of September 1977, when Lord Ted Goodwin knocked himself out cold scoring for the St George Dragons, in the first ever drawn Grand Final. Between the St George Dragons & the Parramatta Eels that ended in a 9 all draw after 100 minutes of play.

Then both teams played a grand final replay the following Saturday the 24th of September, where the Dragons defeated the Eels 22 to 0. The grand final back in those days was played at 3pm on a Saturday afternoon.

So far there has only been 2 grand final draws that required a replay. The very next year in 1978 Manly Warringah Sea Eagles & the Cronulla Sutherland Sharks played out an 11 all draw, their grand final replay was played 3 days later on a Tuesday Afternoon and won by the Sea Eagles 16 to 0. The last Saturday grand final was in 1980. Won by the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs 18 over the Eastern Suburbs Roosters 4.

I think the 2005 length of the field try for Wests, stated by Benji and finished by Pat Richards takes some beating.

I was at that game sat in the corner where it was scored. I still wake up at nights reliving it!  I am sure today they would send it up to the bunker and spend twenty minutes trying to find a reason to disallow it…it was so ‘out of this world’.
