The Championship only has value to fans of teams that play in it. Other than that its a second tier of a minority sport that is probably closer to going back to amateur than it is to more teams going full time.

To be fair, that's true of most second tiers in most sports in most countries.

That's true, so the idea that the Championship can somehow become a great standalone competition which is financially sustainable is not based on any reality.

That logic would also mean that the Championship isn't a sustainable comp as part of a P&R structure either. IMO the problem is the unsustainable spending, not the competition structure. The IMG grading should encourage clubs to plan longer term rather than apply a boom or bust strategy which we've seen at countless clubs over the years.

We don't know what the points are yet. We don't know who the 12 are yet. We don't know how those in the roughly 4 clubs who will be outside the 12 but who are the ones who have SL aspirations under any system will react or how far off they will be.

Once we know that, I'll come back to this.

But that doesn't make it a closed shop - because there is a way in, and out.

An educated guess will tell you if your already in super league you will have bigger crowds so will sell more merchandise have more social media hits better sponsorship and bigger backers than the championship clubs so there is very little chance of a championship club ousting a super league club as it doesn’t matter what you do on the pitch hence a closed shop

We do know that London will be kicked out and Wakefield will take their place.Anyone with any sense has known that for months.

And yet, elsewhere, it's being suggested that there's also the chance that Castleford will be replaced by Toulouse and that Hull no longer have an A grade.

Regardless of hull having an a licence their points will still be far and bobs any championship club. I’d be astonished if cas were replaced by Toulouse but would laugh my socks off if it were to happen

Cas are being tipped to get an A grade or very close to it.

Indeed they are. By some.

Just as, on here, they are being tipped - by some - to be replaced.

Either way, a league with a way in and a way out is not a closed shop.

Firstly I think Huddersfield are in more jeopardy than Cas, other than perpetual massive financial inputs from Ken Davey they have championship written all over them.

Secondly I believe the IMG system needs amending. My suggestion would be that if a B grade finishes bottom of SL and a B grade wins the championship, promotion and relegation between them should happen. The fact that the SL club may be 14 pts and the championship club 13 pts should not be a consideration. The difference would be small enough between them to justify P and R

Don't disagree about either of those TBH.

Yes you are correct there is a way in and a way out and that will be the case for another couple of years, but when the 'bedding in' period of this system evens itself out it will then bcome a closed shop in all but name with how the scoring is weighted in favour of incumbent SL clubs, but by that time when the clubs are familiar with this system I expect the 'closed shop's to be made official.

Right or wrong on that Harry, I don’t think it matters. The Championship clubs know what will be required to become a SL club if that is where they want to be, an A licence.

Frankly, only Wakefield appear to resemble anything close to a SL team.

Any club can be the beneficiary of signing SL standard players or be the beneficiary of a wealthy benefactor, but that alone doesn’t mean a club is viable long term, or even short term.

This leaves the great club names in the Championship with an obvious requirement to lift their off field performances to become a sustainable RL club worthy of place in the standard of SL we all want.

Contrary to some posts on here, I actually do have faith that the standards we are striving for will help the Championship become a sustainable competition with some proud histories participating at 21st century standards worthy of corporate partnership, backing and most importantly, good following.

Regards Huddersfield. I think they could be the ones to finish 13th in IMG in next few years (this year may be too soon).

Their performance score hasn’t really improved. They can’t do anything regards facilities, fandom is relatively low but won’t really budge. They’re probably a team that as a few others improve will be overtaken. I think they realise the jeapordy and this is why they’re looking at their own stadium. I wouldn't be surprised if they missed out in next couple of years.

Theres nothing funnier in this thread than seeing "pessimists" invent future scenarios so they can be outraged at it 😅

That would be true if you also did not have P&R beyond SL. However, that's not the case.

If what I suggest does come to fruition SP and Championship clubs either find it a stretch to far to secure a place in SL (I refuse to use the word promotion) or as I also suspect that a closed shop for SL becomes official in the not to distant future I will speak from expierience of supporting my team throughout that time in the Championship when it was a 'Closed Shop'

When the stick is to long to reach the carrot or you are just prevented from bettering yourself on the field of play as in a closed shop situation apathy becomes the norm, supporters drift away and attendances dwindle, in that time I witnessed crowds of around 1,000, going out and about having a drink in town no one spoke RL - unless it was the community clubs - and this was just not in Leigh, talking to fans of other Championship clubs they expressed the same, ambitious owners will not bother investing if SL is beyond reach, I would not expect men like Derek Beaumont or Matt Ellis to put money into a dead end street men like these make targets.

I admire your faith, but I think this system will do the wider (than SL) game no good whatsoever, having been through it previously, when P&R was reinstated the game in the Championship rejuvenated.

When the IMG ratings are released there also needs to be clear guidance for clubs that miss out on Super League on whether there will be any promotion or relegation in the future. I'm not a fan of the drawbridge being pulled up.

Unless I'm missing something, it'll be exactly the same process next year. So no drawbridges being pulled up.
