RL strength is its potential weakness. Our history is a club game playing second fiddle to soccer without a true national interest. We have loads of low hanging fruit to harvest and must try to understand what reality is. Leveraging our value is something we are poop at but I live in hope

The biggest issue has been what happens to those Championship clubs stood on the outside looking in, and Oldham are giving them all hope right now.

Super League is as visible as it has been for a long time. The gates at most SL clubs are the highest they’ve been for decades.

The game is suffering from poor decisions rather than ill health.

We have the revenue to have 500+ people making a full-time living from rugby league in Britain. That was not the case in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s or 1990s. There are plenty of things wrong with the sport in the UK, and plenty of things that could be improved, but it's incredibly difficult to make an argument that we're not in a stronger position now than we were for much of the 20th century.  We've grown significantly since say 1995. The problem is that some other sports have grown faster in that time.

And that’s great……but in 5 years time we still have a SL full of small, deprived northern towns averaging between 7-10,000 fans.  We’re dying, that’s what frustrates me about this forum of about 50 middle aged northern people like myself.  We seem happy that Wakey have got a new stand or Huddersfield have cheap season tickets.  This sport is going to be dead in 20 years if things don’t change radically and soon….

Outside of North America please name me a sport where teams are making a profit and growing? The last interview I saw from one of the Football financial experts was that every single team in the Premier League is losing money!

What is your solution to the so called problems we have? If everything is going wrong and the sport is dying and will be dead in 20 years, what is your solution? I am sure everyone here would love to know what we should be doing to save ourselves.

Big club?  What’s the best average crowd they could bring to SL?  5,000?  Wow.  The small sport gets even smaller, we need a circuit breaker.  Change nothing and nothing changes….

Okay let’s bin Salford then as they aren’t performing too well on the fan front. Some people talk like total idiots tbh.

Hello Oldham fan, don’t be upset.  I’m simply saying everyone getting excited about another 5,000 strong army of fans for whichever club is coming up is getting excited about something not very exciting.  Just more of the same.  Meh.  Change or die….

That's just BS really when it comes to sporting clubs.

A cashed up and competitive Oldham out of BP would be up to 7000 quickly imo

Folk have been saying that for 130 years.

Growth within our traditional market is still growth.

I have quite an extensive collection of programmes going back through the years and I've seen opinion pieces in some of them going back to the 50's saying exactly that - game is dying etc.

The reality is that Northern people are already generally more likely to have a pessimistic/cynical outlook, and it only gets worse as people get to middle aged and beyond because getting old sucks and we all hate it. It's why nostalgia is such a powerful drug and why generational hatred never goes away.

Regardless of what state the game is in, I guarantee in 20 years it will be millennials complaining about the game dying, then it'll be Gen Z in another 20 years and so on.

'Getting old sucks and we all hate it."

If you ask most people when they are young what they want most in life many reply, "To live a long life and to be rich."

Getting old does not suck and many enjoy their later years like a fine bottle of aged wine.

What you are talking about is a character flaw...the person complaining when they are 20 something actually complains even more when they are 60 something...its a character flaw.

Make that two bottles and I'll agree with you!

No what I am talking about is that being young, fit and healthy is pretty commonly accepted as a more desirable than being old - thus, getting old sucks. No one said you can't still enjoy life, but there is a difference between wanting to live a long life and wanting to be old.

I really didn't think that would be controversial enough to draw push back but then again this is the internet.

No pushback...just an observation.

Apparently we've sold 7,500 memberships, which wouldn't usually be earth shattering for a club like Hull, but given what a mess we were last year it's very good.

We also have a couple of promotions for the opening home game against Wigan and apparently they are going well with the club expecting a gate of around 14,000

Listened to John Cartwright on Radio Humberside last night and he seems just the right pragmatic, gnarled old coach who will turn things around quickly. He knows his stuff as he showed at Gold Coast although he's not been a head coach for quite a while..

Hull could hardly have been worse last year so no big ask to see an improvement in 2025.

Hull were a sleeping giant at the Boulevard when Roy Waudby & Arthur Bunting turned them around in the 80s and they're an even bigger sleeping giant with their potential crowds and size of ground now.

It's possible to anticipate another great era of intense Hull/Rovers rivalry imminently. They will fire up each other.

View looks alright from the new East Stand seats. The club says over 9,500 memberships sold so far, there's less than 20 places still on sale now (they hold a few hundred back for 'one match' sales in the season).

I think Cartwright is precisely the right kind of character for the position Hull are in. Proper no-nonsense, Brian McDermott type of bloke, just who you need to sort out a cultural issue (which the last few years have felt like from the outside?). He did a decent job at the Gold Coast, and his reputation as an assistant at Manly was good from the fans I still know out there.

Depends what your criteria is. They have sold more season tickets but Hull's average attendance will be bigger. Revenues will be similar I guess. Rovers are doing real good things on and off the pitch, there's no getting away from that. Hopefully the recent changes at FC will see both clubs pushing each other on.

We heard a few nuggets last year about how poor the training was, how the facilities just weren't up to scratch etc. But a lot more stuff has come to light since. From Hull Uni students making up the bulk of out physio team to players eating lunch in their cars because there was nowhere for them to all sit together.

By all accounts this pre season has been night and day compared to last. Cartwright has got them fit, hungry, and ready to fight for each other. I don't think we have the quality of player to really be in the mix at the top. But I think anyone writing us off as bottom of the table fodder will get a surprise. And if the likes of Moy, Balmforth, Kemp etc are able to have real breakout years then who knows what we might be able to do.
