Just rewatching Early Doors, a much underated classic imo.

Other favourites include Phoenix Nights, Blackadder and Red Dwarf.

This is my topic right here. Comedy is a big passion of mine.

In terms of what I'd define as 'Classic' comedy my favourites would be Father Ted by a long way followed by The Vicar of Dibley.

If we are taking into account any era, my favourite comedy of all time is Plebs, followed by The Inbetweeners, Detectorists and Bluestone 42 I would say.

Enjoyed most of what's been mentioned so far, but for me the greatest of all time is Only Fools and Horses. Next on the list would be Blackadder and Porridge but I'm pretty sure I missing some favourites - too early and watching the NZ v Tonga game

NZ v Tonga certainly could be a funny one! 😆

The Holy Grail of comedy sitcoms for me consists of I'm Alan Partridge and Only Fools and Horses

I've found the success of a comedy comes down to whether I find the main character (or one of the main characters) naturally funny. It wouldn't matter if they were reading from a dictionary, I'd still find it amusing.

I put the success of Partridge and OFAH down to the brilliance of Steve Coogan and David Jason. Their comedic timing and delivery is impeccable. They also tend to play self-deprecating characters. It might explain why I've never taken to Atkinson or Cleese.

Another comedian that fits this bill is Ricky Gervais. The Office and Extras flirt with joining the pantheon, but fall short on multiple rewatches, through no fault of Gervais who carries both shows.

Larry David is another favourite, though the length of Curb means the great stuff gets lost in the dross, making rewatches a chore at times.

It doesn't always have to be the main character/actor that proves the draw. Steve Little steals the show in Eastbound and Down. He plays Stevie Janowski, who for me is the single greatest supporting character in a comedy bar none. Sorry Dave...I mean Rodney!

Top ten for me, in no particular order.

Father Ted, Red Dwarf, Ever Decreasing Circles,  Lead Balloon,  Fawlty Towers, Brittas Empire, Not Going Out, IT Crowd, Alan Partridge ( all series) and Rising Damp.

Lead Balloon, never heard of it until recently,  really recommend it.

The Day Today is one of my all time faves.

Think it’s still very relevant today and a perceptive skit on the rolling news channels.

Chris Morris is a genius!

I agree, Four Lions is a masterpiece of British comedy!

Some good ones mentioned in the list so far but my idea of the best one hasn't been yet - The Thick Of It. Rarely can life have imitated art so much as it has in the dozen or so years since the last series of this was made.

The opening episode of Derry Girls is what I would show to anyone in answer to the question, "How do you set up a new show, introduce all the characters, make it funny *and* have multiple internal story arcs that all come together perfectly inside 25 minutes"?

Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life. (Terry Pratchett)

I love almost anything done by Armando Iannucci, and also Julia Davis.
When i was younger Rik Mayall’s - Kevin Turvey made me laugh out loud.

Police Squad was hilarious.
I loved KYTV, and a huge mention to The Trailer Park Boys.

Father Ted, Blackadder, Dad's Army, Porridge, Alan Partridge, Bottom, Til Death Do Us Part, Steptoe, Fawlty Towers. Probably some others.

From across the pond M*A*S*H, It's Always Sunny in Phildalphia, Frasier, What we do in the Shadows, Schitt's Creek.

Currently I think "Alma's Not Normal" is the best sitcom on the box.Siobhan Finneran and Lorraine Ashburne are brilliant in it.

"I am the avenging angel; I come with wings unfurled, I come with claws extended from halfway round the world. I am the God Almighty, I am the howling wind. I care not for your family; I care not for your kin. I come in search of terror, though terror is my own; I come in search of vengeance for crimes and crimes unknown. I care not for your children, I care not for your wives, I care not for your country, I care not for your lives." - (c) Jim Boyes - "The Avenging Angel"

From here, Regie Perrin, Rising Damp with the brilliant Leonard Rossiter, Porridge, Mrs Merton and some, not all, Blackadder.

Some good stuff here, especially Father Ted and Blackadder.

A current favourite, although a mix of game show and comedy is Taskmaster. It's just nuts at times, Alex Horne is an excellent writer.
