You’ve said that before but it doesn’t really hold up as he clearly has an interest and spends time talking about the sport.

Given that he’s a hard nosed businessman that suggests to me that’s he’s exploring an opportunity for him.

if he had zero interest or intentions he wouldn’t mention us at all in any context.

He needs sports to be destabilised and desperate - because they need to hand over everything to him.

Read what he says and why he says it in that context.

That’s exactly what I’m suggesting in my post.

I can confirm 30+ less sales for Scotland vs Italy at Workington, after this afternoons test purchase for the Tonga match, £7.50 is extremely reasonable, however a £2.50 'delivery' fee for a walk in purchase is beyond taking the mickey, good luck with that, it's cheaper on the telly.

He said a few sentences about it because someone specifically asked him. Honestly mate I’d love him to get involved but don't get your hopes up because it isn’t happening.

Player nicknames, you might be onto something there.

He’s done more than spend a few sentences in total, Eddie.

I don’t want him to get involved but even I can see that he’s had an interest for a while and I’ve stated the reasons why he’s interested in my previous post about DAZN UK.

There's a lot of discussion about creating stars/personalities and the comparison with Littler, but let's be clear, Littlers rise to fame isn't because of his personality. In the same way that Sports Personality of the Year isn't handed out to the person with the best personality, Littlers prominence has stemmed from a perceived moment of sporting history.

A moment of sporting history can be achieved in different ways. Being the first to do something, being the youngest or oldest to do something, breaking an ancient or unobtainable record etc. but the key to the ease of creating a moment of sporting history is the sport itself.

England footballers need to reach the semi finals of a major tournament.

Darts players need to be 16 and need to reach the World Championship final on their first go.

I imagine an archery player would need to win Olympic gold,  with the winning arrow going through the board and accidentally going up Piers Morgans backside.

An England RL player would need to (and won't be able to for many years to come) simply win the World Cup on home soil.

I agree, and i think this is why it's difficult to just start promoting a player, getting them on Loose Women or League of their Own and build stars. Why would people suddenly be interested in Matty Ashton in that context?

People broadly make their name on the back of extraordinary feats in their sport generally.

Think people need to get with the times. Do the younger generations sit around watching terrestrial Tele these days?

All about streaming. Viral video shorts. Podcasts.

People are suggesting 2005 solutions in 2025.

And like I said that extraordinary feat is judged against a bar. Even within competitions, there are different bars. Wigan had to win the quadruple to get the same exposure that Leigh got just from winning the CC. A fringe player at Man City will get the same exposure as Leicesters best player. A British boxer will have to be undisputed world champion at about 4 different weights before they get the same exposure as someone fighting for one heavyweight belt.

And of course the bar changes all the time. A British person winning Wimbledon now wouldn't get the same focus as Andy Murray because he broke that decade long duck. A British F1 driver won't get the same focus as Lewis Hamilton until they win 9 World Championships.

And of course there's the age old taboo. Men will, on the whole, get more exposure than women.

Absolutely and I alluded to this previously. Watching terrestrial TV is just not on any of my kids radar really unless there is something really specific they've heard of.

This hits the nail on the head.  The game needs to look at how it can get visibility with this generation and the influencers many of us look down on.  The world has moved on.

15 seconds of fame: Jake the Snake goes TikTok viral by losing his shorts when tackled in full flight, legitimising his nickname. 😱😱😱.

I think that rather than having moved on, the world has expanded. Don't embrace the new at the expense of the old. Instead,  create once, use many.

I’ll see if I can dig it out but full game/live sport watching amongst the youth is pretty stable.

Obviously the other stuff is important but, yes, they are still watching sport on TV when it’s on.

Yes - like a sporting fixture

Not necessarily, most of the ones on terrestrial they gloss over really and often don't know about. If it's not on Sky Sports chances are they won't look at it.

Our experiences differ, then.

Must do if your kids actively search out every sporting event in terrestrial TV.

If you are talking about genuinely big sporting events like the Euros or a Football World Cup yeah sure. RL doesn't really have those. Most Challenge Cup ties, internationals like England v France or FA Cup matches then no. For better or worse the perception is that most top sport isn't on terrestrial TV so they don't even look for it.

The only reason I know mine do is because some of the games they are interested in watching are on there and they have to ask me what number BBC One is.

We don't even have a TV aerial, and neither do lots of other options I know. Once the previous one broke, everything was available on some kind of streaming app so we just stream off them. I know this is similar to a lot of others and is only growing.

If people are exclusively using streaming service, chances are they'll mainly engage in the big ones. I mean YouTube itself is just huge these days. Having regular content and appearing on popular podcasts and YouTube shows would be a great way to engage.

Star creation is more about stories, not just great on-field play or charismatic characters. Littler was a huge story because of his age as well as his ability. Sinfield has the charisma of a block of wood, but his work with Burrow and the MND charities is legendary.
