14k was the last update.

That was a few days ago now. They will hopefully be pushing 20k come next week.

That’s a shame.

Great news, even if it does look like it was written by an 8 year-old.

I have a feeling the media person at York is a young un’ who as a general rule I find just post without checking and certainly don’t tend to read/edit what they’ve just posted. It’s creeping into the BBC too, some really shoddy errors. I actually read the above release in a Borat voice.

Anyway it’s good news and should be a York Knights record attendance. The current record is 4281, though I doubt it will be a record Rugby League attendance there (7139 for the Women’s Rugby League World Cup).

Is that their record attendance ever, or just the new ground? Surely they got more at Clarence Street back in the day?

That’s the record attendance for York Knights (set at previous ground Bootham Crescent). The record Knights crowd at the new stadium is exactly 4000. Both those records against Bradford.

And yes I believe they sometimes posted 7-8000 crowds at Clarence Street, I’m sure someone who followed the club back then could confirm.

Ah sorry I get it. I always see Phoenix clubs as the same club as the original but see what you mean. Having looked it up the old club’s record was over 14k against Swinton in the challenge cup (imagine that now!).

Three from the 1980s:

York v Fulham 29/3/81 Division Two @ Clarence Street, 7,351

York v Castleford 11/3/84 Challenge Cup quarter-final @ Clarence Street, 8,529

York v Leeds 29/1/89 Challenge Cup round three @ Bootham Crescent, 11,347

I was at the Cas one it 84 . You beat us 14-12 . Steadman (then at York) was outstanding . Can't believe it was 40 years ago . Ground was packed that day .

Looking at pictures of the old ground and I can imagine it being a fantastic atmosphere with nearly 9k crammed into a compact ground like Clarence street.

It was . Wigginton Road was similar to Cas ground in many ways . Stands were close to pitch (but no floodlights) iirc. Was a great atmosphere .

Just under 17k sold i believe and anything around 20k for a Thursday Night is tremendous.

Makes you wonder what it would be if it was A Friday Night or a Weekend ?

About the same?

Still, good to deflate the positives of a superb Thursday night attendance that shows what can be done.

I was at that game too.  And I was also at the Regal Trophy game in 1986 when York beat us 12-10.
