It has been a bit strange because he's still playing well and I'd consider him their best winger (maybe Leigh fans think differently). As for a move to Wigan, who knows. You'd think they must want a back up winger if they were prepared to bring in a 34 year old Union player. They can keep him with only 50% of his salary counting on the cap next year. If his 50% is similar to Charnleys 100%, it would be an absolute no brainer IMO. In saying that, a new second rower has to be the priority if there is cap space. Ricky Leutele was our best centre last year, and even after the announcement of Tesi Nui signing a huge amount of Leigh fans were still complaining and questioning why we weren’t giving Leutele 1 more year instead. I think AJ Towse is seen as the long term option on the left wing and I also think Lam values the versatility of McIntosh being able to play 1-5 in a pinch as the intermediary, he’ll be on less money than Charnley too. I’m happy to trust the club on recruitment, they’ve been nailing it the past 4 years.
phiggins Posted July 15 Posted July 15 There's been some proper headloss on social media from Leigh fans over that Charnley clip, and no idea why. I'd understand it more if he was under contract for next year, but he isn't. Sky did him a bit by clipping that bit up for a headline without any of the context of when it was recorded or any of the conversation that led to that. He was originally asked if he had an offer to stay, he said no. Then was asked where he would like to play, he said he just wanted to play Super League. Then after a conversation about his career, starting out at Wigan, being a Wigan fan, his relationship with Sean Wane etc, he was asked what his ideal club would be to finish his career. Of course that would be Wigan. Not sure why he was so confused at not being allowed out on loan, he was one injury away from being in the team. And the reason for dropping him stacks up as well, saying he wasn't getting enough tries. He was something like 1 in 6 games, while the rest of the backs were scoring every other game. His general performance was way below what he's shown in the last two weeks as well. I hope he has extended, but doubt it from Lam's post match interviews at the weekend. One very odd thing from that Bench podcast, was Wilking going on about how players should be allowed to talk to clubs as soon as they hit the last year of their contract, with Charnley nodding along in agreement. They can talk to other clubs can't they? Thought they moved it forward from May to December this season. 2

I agree, even though he was coming back from injury earlier this year when he did come back he didn’t look interested at times, taking no carries and looked to me to be actively staying out of the game. If he’d played like he has in the last 2 games taking big carries, offering energy and enthusiasm the tries would have come and he wouldn’t have lost his place. Sounds to me to be a bit of player attitude and decent coaching by Lam. On the flip side after watching that interview I don’t like hearing about players being left in limbo (if it’s true) I think they should be told clearly wether they are in future plans or not. There is nothing stopping him signing for any other SL team for next year if he’s off contract. Maybe Lam doesn’t want to pay what he’s asking for? 1

Didn't sound good. Possibly a consequence of not having a Head of Rugby in place. Lam will be more bothered about getting players ready for games, while Beaumont and Jukes are Beaumont and Jukes. I reckon Chester would've made a decision on whether to offer him a deal or not, and told him by now. As he did last year. 2

If you think back to those games he wasn't scoring I believe there is a an explanation to that, Tesi Niu was not very good at passing the ball early doors, it must have been worked on in training and the evidence was some of the balls he gave on Saturday which makes him look a totally different player and a centre for a good finishing winger to play outside of, yes I know he didn't give Josh any passes for the two tries Josh scored, but I am totally exited what that partnership could blossom into. 1

Would you prefer McIntosh in the left wing position? In his current form he is, but when he initially came back from injury he wasn't playing like he has in the past couple of games, so I didn't think it was particularly controversial when he got dropped, particularly when this is a squad in transition looking to the future. I also think that McIntosh has come in for a huge amount of massively undeserved criticism from Leigh fans. He has the 5th highest average gain per carry in the league (9.04m) and actually the highest average gain of anyone with 1000+ meters. As you rightly point out in another post, any winger outside Tesi Niu isn't going to be seeing huge amounts of ball because he isn't a wingers' centre. But that's fine, because in terms of attacking weapons, Tesi Niu is a howitzer. Likewise, Charnley's effectiveness as a try scorer has been impacted by the lack of ball playing numbers on the pitch for Leigh in 2025. Personally, if everyone was fit, I'd be playing the backline that started in some of the early rounds - Armstrong, Hodgson, Niu, Hanley, Brand.

Multiple players were in limbo last year going very deep into the season, Leutele being a prime example where deals were still being hinted at going into the playoffs. It's a normal part of the recruitment cycle and there will be players at every club in the same situation, where the club is waiting to see if anything better comes along.

I think it was pretty clear pretty early that Leutele wouldn't be offered a new deal. We were speaking to Niu pretty early on last season. The players that went to Hull were either offered a 1 year, or nothing by the time they signed, which was pretty quickly after the May date when negiotiations were formally allowed.

I’m constantly talking with Chezzy (director of rugby Chris Chester) and the club,” said ex-Samoa international Leutele. “The good thing is the club want me and I want to stay so we’ve just got to work out the finer details of it all and hopefully get it over the line some time soon.”
