Which country would you say is the least mentioned or talked about country in the world? Which country is never ever mentioned in the news or online or in magazines and newspapers or even just in conversations with friends?

Of course different people may have different answers depending on their interests and so what they read about or talk about but in general, which country do you think?

I will say Paraguay. I can't remember the last time I saw or heard anything about Paraguay, it appears to me that nothing ever happens there that gets noticed by the rest of the world.

Well you're both wrong.

According to available data, Eritrea is likely the country with the least news items reported in the last year, due to its highly restrictive media landscape and censorship, often ranking as one of the most censored countries globally.

I'm pretty sure that means that Eritrea receives the least amount of news, internally, given the lack of freedom of press. If I'm correct, this thread is more about individual feeling about your own thoughts on which countries don't often feature often in the news that you watch.

That is exactly what I created this thread to discuss, our own thoughts on which countries we hear the least about. For example, many people may say they never hear or read anything about Kyrgyzstan but this is not true of me personally because I read a lot of books about the Cold War and the Soviet Union and as a result Kyrgyzstan is occasionally mentioned.

Okay, fair enough. I do talk about Eritrea often with Uber drivers who have emigrated from there.

I'll change my answer to Mayotte then.

Jesus now we have to go through what defines a country. Are we limiting it to just UN members or are we including all mainly autonomous regions?

We're talking sovereign states. Mayotte is a department of France and so an integral part of that sovereign state. There is certainly plenty said about France.

If we're allowing countries with no international recognition, I'm going to say my back bedroom which has just now unilaterally declared independence from the UK. There's not once been a TV camera in there as far as I know.

Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a self-governing overseas territory but not a country.

Bhutan is a Kingdom in the Himalayas but a country that I'm picking many wouldn't know exists.

It takes wisdom to know when a discussion has run its course.

It takes reasonableness to end that discussion.

i was thinking to myself....hmmm Chad, whatever happens there, never hear that in the news. so i googles it and find

"Chad say military foiled armed assault on presidential complex, 19 killed

The attack came just hours after China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with government officials in the capital N’Djamena"

........along with a disputed presidential election

just shows ya, whats happening and whats on the news isnt entirely the same thing.

I've been following a couple of projects in Afghanistan and all the central Asian -stans get regular mentions in my consumption.

I'll throw in either Kiribati or Tuvalu

They got some coverage recently over immigrants coming from Comoros and being rounded up for deportation.

Bhutan has been getting coverage recently because of China effectively occupying parts of it as part of the long-running India-China border dispute.

And I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually read about St Pierre and Miquelon within the last week.

The three Sahelian "coup" States have all had coverage over the last few years - Chad, Mali and Burkina Faso.

Anyone know much about Guinea Bissau?

Not much, which for a lot of African countries, may be a good thing. We tend to hear about most African countries when they have civil wars or epidemics or drought-induced famines. Guinea Bissau seems to be one of the "lucky" ones where people are dirt poor but it's generally peaceful. Even the dirt poor people usually live on their own farms so they're not starving just poor in terms of cash and material possessions.

In the news at least a couple of times a year.

You want a stable, small country, not in Europe, not involved in drugs, and without a decent football team.

The problem is, if you’be heard about them then they’ve already failed the test.

Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life. (Terry Pratchett)

Since they will all have been pointless answers listed on Pointless, this thread is effectively null and void.

Next question please, Mr Goose.
