I don't understand.

The Allegiant Stadium doesn't have any conspicuous white soccer lines drawn all over the field. And there are proper rugby league markings everywhere.

Bit like proper rugby league grounds like Huddersfield, Hull, Wigan.... Oh hang on a minute....

Here's a fun game. Let's imagine what Vegas would have been like had Super League been running the event....

Well the whole event would be a curtain raiser for Wakefield vs Salford for a start.

It would only have been organised a couple of weeks ago and would have originally been planned for the Allegient but at the last moment would have been moved to a local elementary school football field that holds a couple of thousand at most on some bleachers. The RL markings would be virtually invisible on the field against the football markings and the organisers would have lost the rugby balls on the fishing boat across the Atlantic Ocean, which they rented for far, far too much money off an old time, 90 year old fisherman call Fred who lives in Morecambe. So without any balls, American Football balls are used during the game which kicks off an hour late because Warrington's plane is diverted to Miami and Wigan's coach is broken down on Route 66 outside some hickville in the middle of the desert.

It's almost as if this massive stadium, whose regular team has an annual revenue of $779 million, has more money to spend on pitch markings (and more staff to deal with them) than Huddersfield Giants.

Gosh.

This one off thing is different to something that happens weekly? Wow, that's amazing.....

And nobody would know anything about it, no advertising or anything like that, you don’t know who might turn up, god forbid!!

Great thread! 🤦‍♂️

I would mention the SL match played at Camp Nou a few years ago, but that won't fit your narrative.

I bet someone whinged about the blued-out Football lines at the time.

It does my head in that clubs who control their own grounds and don't share with other sports, like my own, Leeds, Castleford, etc. etc. don't mark their own pitches properly. That means lines every 10 metres, the 40/20 lines being dual white/red rather than just red, and having the "10", "20", etc marked next to each line.

That's the official markings, they don't have to worry about anyone else, and it's a tin of paint.

The standard in UK RL seems to be lines every 10m and red for the 40 and 20 now. That's relatively consistent across sl now.

Think Hudds is the one that I've seen that misses this, but then we've also seen the quality of their social media announcements this year too.

So here's where we are:

The biggest UK RL events tend to be played sometimes with very subtle branding and the soccer lines just visible in washed out green.

At the other end of the spectrum (Sorry, Huddersfield), the bog-standard to worst case RL game is played with RL markings at bare minimum and soccer line still in near-full white.

We NEVER have a pitch dressed as might be classed as ideal (basic NRL, Allegiant, etc).

The argument is one or all of these:

- Ground owners won't allow it.
- Too expensive.
- Doesn't matter (English audience doesn't care)
- No staff to do it.
- Easier to do it digitally (TV viewers see a brand but it's not painted)
- Never thought about it

Meanwhile, I note:

- Peter V'ylandis was obsessing about the markings in Vegas (and he has no time to waste). NRL really care about this stuff (we don't).
(Fair, the Allegiant has a whole team of full-time grass-painters).
- Why does RL final at Wembley not match the level of the NFL there?
- Even if we can't paint the grass, why can't we just power wash the soccer off?
- Why can't we even get basis RL markings consistent?
- In the late 80s, 90s, Wembley was painted properly. It can be done.

We moan and groan about RL Super League being so far behind. But we have it in our own hands to make things happen that would reflect a proper professional outlook. And it's not always just about lack of funds or not having permission.

Imagine this year you enter Wembley (final or test) and it's marked out as professionally as the NFL with no soccer lines in sight, coloured in goals, numbered lines, etc. Would the positive benefit on the audience be worth the expense (financial, practical, emotional) that somebody at RFL had decided to expend on making that happen?

Or let's not bother. Just watch the game and be quiet.

You do realise the American Chuckball is played on a seperate pitch to the football and rugby at Wembley don't you?

The first challenge cup final final with numbers was 1999. Weve probably had it for c15 years out of 130 or so.

I take the point about a nicely dressed pitch looks good, but it does need to be weighed up versus cost, effort and practicalities.

A lot of it is personal preference and how big a factor it is is up to individuals. I personally hate the red lines that we use nowadays, I don't think red on green is a good idea, certainly not in terms of accessibility.

I strongly believe that the little details matter. I accept that in some venues we’re not primary tenants, and so have to compromise. But where we are, or where we are paying a fortune to rent something like Wembley, then we should not.

As you say, the NFL don’t accept it - their games at Wembley and White Hart lane are properly dressed.

We don't have numbers on the pitch now in this country, so I'm not sure why we would insist on it at Wembley.

We've made a choice on how we dress pitches in the UK.

I don’t remember that choice being actively made. Clubs just stopped making the effort.

It didn't just get forgotten.

I expect it was a cost decision.

They changed the pitch markings approach in SL last season (solid red lines), so these things are obviously discussed.

I have forgotten it to be honest.

I always just remember the foam/padding things on the 40 / 20 metre lines.

Do we still have those? Seem to recall them relatively recently being sponsored by Glen's Vodka?
