Haha just reading the article and was going to quote the same part.

If the RFL think having a few roses matches is going to get us closer to the Aussies, they are in cloud cuckoo land. This must start at the bottom.

They need to start somewhere, but increasing participation will be the biggest factor in closing that gap. But that's 10yrs of development away so it's not a short term fix. 

I mentioned on another thread that the next gen are certainly more skilled in the basics and that will hopefully close the gap a touch when they get a chance to play. 

Long term a semi professional league would be nice, but the finances just aren't there and likely not for the foreseeable.
