By playing for Dewsbury v Rochdale yesterday, Paul Sykes became the first player to play 27 seasons of professional rugby league.

Over 500 appearances and 2700 points. Still playing age 43..

Reminds me of Matt Calland who turned out for Rochdale Mayfield well in his 40s absolutely incredible characters both, Jarrod Sammut cut out of the same flint, But Paul Sykes is the daddy!

No relation to the boxer

Paul Sykes (The Boxer)did play Rugby League.I played against him in the early seventies when he turned out for Malt Shovel in the Wakefield Sunday League.Must have been during one of his quiet spells. He said Rugby League is a lot harder than boxing.

Incredible when I think I'm pretty much the same age and creaking badly after playing for a fraction of that time.

No disrespect Damien, is that really your age?

Pah, these half backs have it easy. Not like Jeff Grayshon who played prop for most of his 26 professional seasons until he was 45 and had broken biscuits for knees by the time he retired.

Seriously though, it’s a great achievement by Paul Sykes and congratulations to him.

I’m not prejudiced, I hate everybody equally

Aaron Wood (no relation to Aaron Woods, the ex Kangaroo or Aaron Wood who played for York and Donny) played his last game a couple of weeks ago for Pamiers in France, also in his forties.

He's moved around even more than Paul Sykes though. He played Jersey Flegg with St. George, then three reserve grade Premier League wins with Parramatta (2005-2007, alongside Jarryd Hayne, Henry Perenara), then multiple French league and cup wins with Limoux, Toulouse, Avignon), player-coached at West Wales, played internationally for France.

Didn’t he also return to Australia and captain coach Macksville in group 2?

I didn't know that, but google says you're right, he did 🙂

And referring to the original post, what I find impressive is that watching Dewsbury v Widnes last season, as a Widnes fan I was still nervous when he got the ball. He's not quite as fast, not quite as strong, but still a great player.
