Many RL clubs were part of multi-sports organisations. Fartown Batley and Halifax are examples that come easily to mind and I am sure there are others.

In addition to the netball team mentioned above, Leeds RL are (or were) registered with Companies House as "Leeds Cricket Football & Athletic Co. Ltd"

Placing a professional RL team in Durham for the purpose of trying to be neutral sounds like the scenario of trying to please everyone but actually ending up pleasing no one for me .

yea very true, i just think we have to come to the conclusion that as much as id like it to, a north east professional RL isn't going to work.

Depends how you define popular….I suspect ice hockey in sheffield for example gets crowds similar to the rugby league team….but I might be way off mark on that.

The Steelers draw support from a much wider area than just Sheffield.

Correct, but the Sheffield public are more aware of the Steelers than the Eagles.

I think for football mad areas like Newcastle, Sunderland and also Liverpool for that matter RL really needed to be introduced to these areas decades ago preferably around the pre or post WW2 era and allowed to grow at grassroots level as well for the game to have taken hold.
