Older than Drinkwater,  Craven and Dean I think so very much a short term option if true.

Which of the current 3 will be leaving as I can't see us having two of them not playing each week.

I think drinky was a one year deal so likely to move on

Unlikely, I think DC seems almost surplus to requirements this season, which I find very strange tbh

He's 36 years old and will offer nothing to the team.

Much better to look for a younger player.

lomax is out  injured for at least 4 weeks, and could need surgery.

your thoughts are like mine bigred, his days are over

It's interesting how out of touch Ford and BQ seem with the fanbase on this. They seem to want hugely experienced and quality players but who are in the last year or two of their careers whereas I've not talked to one fan who wouldn't prefer younger but still talented players getting a chance. I'd much rather see Sambou(even though he's leaving and injured), Tyrer, O'Keefe, Forster, Aldridge play and improve and be guided around by the likes of Wildie and Drinkwater.

We wouldn't finish as high up the table this year but I think we'd be building a squad that can last for a significant amount of time whereas going for these flashier but short term signings means we're going to have to rebuild the squad almost every year or two at the max.

I think it is best to judge recruitment in the round rather than on individual players like Lomax.

He is seasoned for sure... 34 and will be 35 by the time next season starts. A magnificent player and leader who has been the captain of a superb Saints but with new talent emerging its not surprising he is moving on.

On a related point.. I have just been watching leigh vs Hull. A late sub for leigh was josh Charnley who along with Ryan Hall has vied for the super league record scorer..289 to date. According to some he is also joining us next year.

I had heard this rumour too. Still a good player.

I heard about Lomax and Charnley. Plus still under negotiation is a big new shirt sponsorship deal…with Help the Aged.
Seriously though, big signings which will raise interest in the club, help imo attract other good players to us, and also help support the development and learning of the younger, longer lasting up and coming players of the future that we need. Keep at it Bill & Mike. Respect is due.

I totally agree with you. These big name short term signings are a long term investment in attracting good young players to what we all hope is a successful club, high in media and public consciousness.

We aren't going to be in Super League in the next two or three years anyway,  irrespective of results on the field.

These signings are not the right way going forward in my opinion, but I do agree we can only assess when we know the full squad.

We need a much more even balance next season, we can't go on with guys the wrong side of 30 in every key position. I just hope there are more keys like Farnworth in the pipeline who is in my opinion, our best forward by a mile. Young, aggressive and hasn't spent long spells unfit.

If Lomax came in to play full back with Drinkwater at 7, that's two of the three key positions in our attack that would be lacking the energy and speed Featherstone beat us with at the weekend. PLT for all his faults at least frightens a defence with how quick he is.

In a league we can't get promoted from, there's no reason not to be promoting younger players.

I'm sure he won't be coming to play full-back, more likely 6 with Josh at 7.

I'd be all over Charnley but would pass on lomax. We could do with a player like neil roden at half back, young talented and something to prove. A few veterans is fine but you need some energy too. I'd rather be somewhere good young players come, even if they use us a shop window for SL than become a retirement home for old pros.

Isn't Riley Dean that young talented half?

OLDHAM are lining up an audacious bid for St Helens veteran Jonny Lomax, League Express can exclusively reveal.

Lomax is out of contract at the end of the 2026 Super League season, but the Roughyeds are keen to bring the veteran halfback to Boundary Park for next season.

The 34-year-old has played his entire career with Saints to date, winning five Super League titles, a Challenge Cup and a World Club Challenge with the Red Vee.

However, Oldham are on a major recruitment drive and Lomax could well play the remainder of his career out in the Championship with the Roughyeds.

Of course, Lomax has struggled for game time in 2025, with head coach Paul Wellens choosing to tinker with Tristan Sailor, George Whitby and Jack Welsby in the halves.
